Image: Vivo

vivo is working on expanding its already pretty expansive Y line of entry-level smartphones, and today details about two upcoming devices have been outed. We’re talking about the Y30 5G and the Y02s.

The vivo Y30 5G, not to be confused with the vivo Y30 launched back in 2020, will arrive soon with the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC at the helm, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It was already certified by NBTC last week.

Xiaomi’s new Google Assistant smart speaker offers IR control over your TV and appliances

Image: Xiaomi

Google Assistant smart speakers often only serve a couple of key purposes – to accept commands and play music. With Xiaomi’s new Google Assistant smart speaker, you also get the power to control your TV and other electronics through an IR transmitter.

Launching in India, the “Xiaomi Smart Speaker IR Control” is notable for exactly what’s in the name. It has a built-in ability to control nearby electronics using IR signals.

The Google Assistant smart speaker works, at its core, like any other. It has the same basic features as something like a Google Nest Mini. “Hey Google” launches the microphones with support for queueing up music, controlling smart home devices, setting timers, and asking questions, among other things.

For listening to music, the Xiaomi Smart Speaker IR Control has 360-degree surround sound. Xiaomi says it also has two far-field microphones, and there’s the usual support for Stereo Pair through the Google Home app.

Poco is now rebranding the Redmi Note 10S, FCC documents show

Image: FCC

Redmi and Poco absolutely love to play the rebranding game, and it definitely looks like this isn’t going to stop anytime soon. In fact, Poco may be getting ready to rebrand yet another device – in this case, we’re talking about the Redmi Note 10S, which launched under that name back in 2021.

It’s a bit late to rebrand a handset more than a year after it first surfaced, but that’s exactly what some newly surfaced FCC documents show is going to happen. Poco has asked for an FCC certification based on the previous one issued for the Redmi Note 10S, given that the two handsets are identical save for some minor variations.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 (2022) renders, key specs and price leak

It’s been a while now since Samsung updated its budget Galaxy Tab A line. As per a fresh new leak, a new Tab A7 (2022) model is just around the corner. The leak offers a look at the tablet’s rather unexciting design. It honestly looks like a spitting image of the 2020 Galaxy Tab A7 10.4 model both from the front and back.

Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card could arrive in October

Image: Nvidia

Nvidia’s RTX 4090 is still set to debut first out of all the next-gen Lovelace graphics cards, and the GPU should arrive in October according to the latest from the rumor mill – but there are worrying factors which could interfere with that plan.

YouTube leaker Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID) has been busy chatting about the RTX 4090, and asserts that it’ll be a 450W graphics card, and that it’ll most likely turn up in October, or at least that’s Team Green’s current plan according to one source.

Another source backs up that theory, that this is the planned timeframe right now, but that nothing is “100% decided” at this point. In other words, it sounds like there’s potential for things to slide, particularly when you consider what else MLID discusses in his latest video.

Namely that graphics card manufacturers are becoming ‘desperate’ regarding the amount of RTX 3000 stock they need to shift, as we’ve already heard several times, and Nvidia is apparently now working harder to come up with solutions to help clear that excess inventory before Lovelace GPUs arrive (and current-gen cards will become much more difficult to shift).

Xiaomi will unveil its first car prototype in August

Image: Arenaev

Technically, this is not the first EV Xiaomi has put out. That would be the Xiaomi M365 electric scooter. There’s an “um, actually” fact to toss to your friends. Joking aside, the Chinese giant made a big commitment to the electric car market last year, pledging to invest $10 billion over the next ten years.

WhatsApp tests reaction previews in your chat list

Image: Whatsapp

WhatsApp was late to the party for showing message reactions in chats — launching it only a couple of months ago — with Telegram delivering the feature last December. Meanwhile, Instagram has supported emoji reactions for much longer. Despite being so tardy here, WhatsApp’s recent expansion of emoji options for reactions showed us that the developers were starting to take this pretty seriously. Now the Meta-owned entity is testing some new previews for message reactions right within the chat list.

Testers running a recent WhatsApp beta (WABetaInfo suggests most are seeing it on v2.22.16.6, though it’s also appearing for some on v2.22.16.5) now receive info about recent reactions in the chat overview. Being on either beta version doesn’t guarantee its availability as it appears to be a phased rollout. As you can see in the screenshot below, individual or group chats showing a preview of the most recent message reaction from the chat list.

Sony officially owns Bungie now

The ink is dry on Sony’s acquisition of Bungie, the gaming company that created sci-fi hits Halo and Destiny.

Both companies announced the news on Twitter Friday, confirming that the $3.6 billion deal had gone through without any surprises.

While that’s a large sum for a relatively small company, the merger was modest enough to evade the antitrust scrutiny that Sony rival Microsoft triggered with its planned parallel acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion.

Bungie may not be a sprawling entity like Activision Blizzard — which publishes everything from Overwatch and World of Warcraft to the Call of Duty mega-franchise — but it’s nonetheless poised to have a huge impact on Sony’s roadmap for near-future games.

At Sony, Bungie will remain a standalone game studio but its expertise will be woven into the company’s strategy for PlayStation Studios, the division of Sony Interactive Entertainment dedicated to making tentpole games that showcase the company’s technological prowess. Sony has big plans to leverage Bungie’s fine-tuned model for a whole slate of live service games — online multiplayer games that sell virtual goods and evolve over time, often charging players set monthly fees for access or special perks.

Elon Musk files motion against Twitter’s bid to fast-track trial

Image: Brendan McDermid/Reuters

Elon Musk has filed a motion opposing Twitter’s request to fast-track a trial over his plan to terminate his $44bn deal for the social media company.

Musk’s lawyers, in papers filed with the Delaware Chancery court on Friday, said Twitter’s “unjustifiable request” to rush the merger case to trial in two months should be rejected.

It is the latest move in what promises to be a major legal showdown between Twitter and Musk. The San Francisco-based company is seeking to resolve months of uncertainty for its business as Musk tries to walk away from the deal over what he says is Twitter’s “spam bot” problem.
