Teaser for Samsung’s foldables leaks, claims “Flex is greater than Flat”

Video: @chunvn8888

Samsung’s next big Unpacked event is scheduled for August 10 and the company promised to release teasers in the built-up to the event. Here is one, though note that it comes through unofficial means – it was posted by leakster @chunvn8888.

The teaser states the mission goal of Samsung’s Z-series – “Flex is greater than Flat”. The video shows the silhouettes of the two foldables, the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4, but it’s a “blink and you miss it” moment. We tried to brighten things up for the header image, below is a copy of that image for a closer look.

The end shows a clear side view of the Z Flip4, which we’ve seen that featured in previous teasers. That side view forms a “greater than” sign that sits between “Next Galaxy” and “Phones Now”.

RedMagic 7S Pro Gaming Phone Hides Its Selfie Camera Behind the Screen

Image: Cnet

Nubia’s new $729 (£669, roughly AU$1,160) RedMagic 7S Pro could be one of the first US phones with a decent under-display camera. An international model of the gaming phone was revealed Tuesday. It’s got a 16-megapixel front-facing camera hidden underneath its display and it runs on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. The phone is similar to a version released July 11 in China. Putting the selfie camera under the display means you get more screen real estate for games.

We’ve seen under-display cameras before, but they either produce grainy photos, like the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, or they don’t make it to the US, like the 32-megapixel one on the ZTE Axon 20. To be clear, the 4-megapixel under-display camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is intended for video calls only. The phone has a dedicated selfie camera built-into the external display.

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Is Getting a New Bora Purple Color Option

Image: Lisa Eadicicco/CNET

Those in the market for a Galaxy S22 now have a new color option to choose from. Samsung is launching its flagship phone in a new Bora Purple shade, the company announced on Tuesday. Pricing for the Bora Purple model is the same as previously launched colors and it will be available on Aug. 10.

The color is significant for Samsung. Bora is the Korean word for purple, and Samsung said the new color is meant to “evoke joy, spark creativity and embrace individuality.” Otherwise, the Bora Purple Galaxy S22 remains unchanged; it has the same processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Samsung Exynos), 6.1-inch screen and triple-lens camera with a 50-megapixel main sensor.

The Bora Purple color is only available for the standard Galaxy S22, not the 6.6-inch Galaxy S22 Plus or 6.8-inch Galaxy S22 Ultra. But new Galaxy devices coming later this year will also be available in Bora Purple, according to Samsung. The Bora Purple Galaxy S22 will be available through AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Xfinity Mobile and US Cellular in addition to Samsung’s website when.

Pixel 7 series and Pixel Tablet camera specifications revealed in new leak

While Google typically doesn’t showcase new hardware at its I/O developer conference, the company didn’t stick to the norm this year. During this year’s I/O keynote, Google announced the Pixel 6a and Pixel Buds Pro, and gave us our first look at the Pixel 7 series, Pixel Watch, and Pixel Tablet. While Google did not reveal much about the upcoming devices at the time, a new leak has revealed the camera specifications for the Pixel 7 series and the Pixel tablet.

Developer Kuba Wojciechowski spotted the camera hardware configurations for the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and the Pixel Tablet while digging through the GS101 Camera Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) from Android 13 Beta 4. Although Google had obfuscated the sensor names in the code, Wojciechowski managed to match the sensor IDs in the code to actual camera hardware using various resources.

Galaxy Watch 6 could use OLED display made by a Chinese firm

Image: Sammobile

Samsung’s Galaxy smartwatches have exclusively used OLED panels from Samsung Display, offering excellent image quality. But the display supplier could change next year, at least going by the latest report.

According to an exclusive report from Naver, Samsung is in talks with Chinese display manufacturer BOE for the Galaxy Watch 6. The smartwatch is expected to be launched in the second half of 2023. Samsung Electronics has reportedly made a formal request to China’s biggest display firm, and the two companies are coordinating the production schedule.

In addition, Samsung is also said to be discussing the use of BOE’s OLED panels in high-end Galaxy smartphones. Until now, BOE’s panels were only used in entry-level and mid-range smartphones like the Galaxy A13 and the Galaxy A23.

The South Korean firm is reportedly doing this to diversify its supply chain and add more suppliers for its mobile devices. This will make the production more cost-effective and reliable. Samsung hasn’t formally confirmed the information, and things can only be confirmed next year.

Motorola is announcing the Edge X30 Pro alongside the Razr 2022 next week, on August 2. As we get closer to that moment, we learn more about the devices – this time it’s all about the X30 Pro.

According to Chen Jin, Lenovo’s GM of its mobile phone business in China, the X30 Pro will be more expensive than the X30, which launched last December. That phone started at CNY 2,999 (approximately $444), but the new X30 Pro won’t be able to match that price.

Honor pulls team out of India, will continue with a “safe approach”

Honor revealed its team based in India is pulling out. George Zhao, company CEO, revealed the brand will remain in the market but all hands-on personnel is leaving and local partners will represent the brand.

The announcement comes as Indian authorities launched a series of probes into Chinese companies, including Xiaomi, vivo, and Oppo.

George Zhao revealed the brand will adopt a “very safe approach” in its market presence. He also shared that there has been a lot of work to assemble a local team, but due to “obvious reasons”, it will be disbanded. The news comes as Honor made a strong impression with its Magic4 flagship series and the number series midrangers started picking up steam around the globe.

Honor’s decision to pull out is rather unusual, as the company hasn’t officially faced any investigations. Meanwhile, other Chinese companies faced prosecution by the Indian tax agency and finance ministry but never announced any similar measures. So far, offices of Huawei have been searched in February, $725M from Xiaomi have been seized in May, and vivo’s bank accounts have been frozen after it was found to funnel over $8 billion to parent companies to avoid paying taxes. Oppo was the latest to be caught evading custom duties with over $551 million allegedly unpaid dues.

Krafton says it has invested over $100 million in India and wants to become more than just a gaming company

Krafton, the brand behind some of the world’s most popular video games, says it has already deployed the $100 million it had committed to the Indian market two years ago in the South Asian nation and is gearing up to launch several new titles in the country.

The four-year-old South Korean firm, which went public last year, gained popularity with its shooter game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds — commonly called PUBG. The title, PUBG Mobile, amassed over 50 million monthly active users in India, becoming the most popular mobile game in the country, until it landed on the list of apps New Delhi ordered to block over national security concerns.

Unlike most other firms on the block list, Krafton has been able to relaunch a new title in India — called Battlegrounds Mobile India. The game, released in India in July last year, shares many similarities with PUBG Mobile, though the developer claims it has introduced many changes to address local concerns.

In November, Krafton brought PUBG: New State as its new game based on the same last-man-standing gameplay, also called battle royale amongst gamers, that is available on BGMI and PUBG Mobile. That new offering was renamed as New State Mobile in January — as a strategy to avoid getting into trouble for the issues raised against the PUBG title earlier.
