Samsung’s budget Galaxy A03 passes the FCC with 5,000 mAh battery

Image: Samsung

Samsung’s got another entry-level Galaxy A series phone in the works. It’s possibly going to be called the Galaxy A03, and it’s now taken a step closer to an official launch by grabbing certification from the FCC.

The FCC certification gives us a basic outline of the A03’s design and mentions a 5,000 mAh battery, along with the usual details on its network connectivity (there’s no 5G, in case you’re wondering). 5,000 mAh batteries are pretty standard across Samsung’s budget Galaxy A smartphones, and it seems the A03 will do nothing to change that.

Samsung’s future smartwatches could include handy solar charging tech

Power consumption has always been an issue for smartwatches, as fitting a sizeable battery within the confines of a small, wrist-worn device is a challenging task. We’ve experienced this very issue in Samsung’s smaller Galaxy Watch 4 variants. However, it seems that Samsung may have found a possible solution to the problem.

This month, a new patent (via LetsGoDigital) details a solar watch strap design for a future Samsung smartwatch. According to the detailed description, Each strap section would house a solar cell that provides power to the watch’s battery. Samsung describes using a quantum dot-laden polymer above these solar cells to change the path of light. The company believes this design could be highly efficient.

Apple’s High Power Mode could mean MacBook performance boost

Image: Digital Trends

In January 2020, it emerged that Apple was working on a so-called Pro Mode for its Macs. While that never became an official MacOS feature, it looks like it could be making a return under the name High Power Mode.

According to 9to5Mac, MacOS Monterey beta 8 contains references to High Power Mode in its code. Unlike the Pro Mode leak, there are no details as to how exactly this would work. However, Pro Mode itself could give us some clues.

That’s because when it was discovered nestled inside MacOS Catalina 10.15.3 code, Pro Mode was accompanied by text explaining its expected effects. For instance, one line mentioned “Apps may run faster, but battery life may decrease and fan noise may increase.” There was also a mention of “Fan speed limit overridden.”

AirTags can be weaponized by injecting code; Apple says fix on the way

A security researcher has shown that AirTags can be weaponized by injecting code into the phone number field before placing it into Lost mode and dropping it in strategic places. Apple has confirmed the finding.

When someone finds the AirTag and scans it, they will be redirected to the website of the attacker’s choice, which could include a fake iCloud login to report the find …

Boston-based security consultant Bobby Rauch discovered the vulnerability back in June, informed Apple, and said he would allow the company 90 days before publicly disclosing the flaw. This 90-day period is common practice in the security field, allowing a company enough time to issue a patch while incentivizing them to do so promptly.

However, he said that Apple failed to fix it within the 90-day period, and also did not tell him when it would do so, whether he would be credited, and whether he would qualify for a bug bounty. Accordingly, he has now disclosed the vulnerability.

Apple has been criticized by the infosec community for the way it responds to zero-day flaw reports.

Your Next Air Conditioner Is Going to Be Different—and Better—Than Your Old One

Image: Jenny Kane (AP)

Your next window unit air conditioner is in for some big changes over the next decade. The Environmental Protection Agency finalized a rule last week to largely phase out the chemicals in air conditioners that keep your room cool but damage the climate.

Hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, are the basis for most cooling technology. In addition to air conditioners, they’re also found in everything from fridges to car engines. The chemicals came into widespread use decades ago after the world recognized the need to phase out a different type of chemical—chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which were wreaking havoc on the ozone layer.
