Samsung’s finessing one of its best recent mid-rangers with a faster Snapdragon 788G, according to leak

Samsung's finessing one of its best recent mid-rangers with a faster Snapdragon 778G, according to leak
Image: Android Police

According to WinFuture, the Galaxy A52s is underway, and it’s packing the fresh-out-of-the-oven Snapdragon 778G, which claims up to a 35% performance improvement compared to the Snapdragon 750G the A52 employed. However, outside this notable change, there don’t seem to be any other major differences.

The phone, as seen in the leaked marketing image above, has a near-identical design to its predecessor. The 120Hz OLED display, and the quad-camera setup that performs averagely, are also straight pasted from the A52. The colorway palette is also just as vivid — black, green, blue, and violet.

Other key specs of the phone include a 4,500mAh battery, 25W fast charging, IP67 certification, OneUI 3.1 based on Android 11, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The Galaxy A52S will reportedly launch before the end of August and will retail from €449 on up. Exact US pricing and availability aren’t known yet, but it shouldn’t be too long before we end up getting those details from Samsung itself.

Intel locks down all remaining TSMC 3nm production capacity, boxing out AMD and Apple

Download Intel Drivers and Software
Image: Intel

Intel may have pulled a fast one on its industry rivals by buying up a majority of the 3nm node capacity at TSMC in order to fabricate its new GPU and a number of server chips, something that could inhibit AMD and Apple from ramping up production of their own next-gen chips in 2022.

Production with the 3nm node is expected to start in Q2 2022, with mass production expected to start in mid 2022, according to Wccftech. Production capacity would reach about 4,000 in May of next year, with mass production capacity ramping up to 10,000 wafers a month.

TikTok’s new privacy features make teens think about their decisions

TikTok's new privacy features are aimed at getting teens to think about their safety.
Images: NurPhoto Via Getty Images

Announced in a blog post on Thursday, TikTok will now automatically switch off direct messaging for new users aged between 16 to 17. Teens can still easily switch their DMs on via the settings menu, but it will have to be an active choice. The video sharing app will also prompt current users in this age range who haven’t used DMs before to review and confirm their privacy settings when they eventually do try to use it.

These changes should help ease younger users into the lawless carnage of DMs when they’re ready, TikTok having previously disabled direct messaging for all users under 16 in April. Users aged 16 to 17 will also get a new pop-up when they opt to allow people to download their videos, asking them to confirm that choice and warning them their content could be shared on other platforms.

Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 895/898 tests show 20% performance improvement

First details on upcoming Snapdragon flagship and non-5G SD888 version emerge - GSMArena.com news
Image: Gsmarena

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 runs pretty hot, even wildly so under some circumstances on some phones. The Snapdragon 865/865+/870 family doesn’t have this problem, on the other hand. If you were expecting the next generation of Qualcomm’s top of the line chipsets to be cooler than the 888, well, you might be in for a surprise.

According to a rumor out of China, the first testing of samples using Samsung’s 4nm litography shows a 20% improvement in performance for the upcoming chip, which has the model number SM8450 and may be branded as either Snapdragon 895 or 898… or who knows what else. For the sake of sanity we’ll call it 895, but don’t take this to mean we know for sure that’s what it will end up being named.

Canon’s bizarre ‘donut’ mirrorless camera design is strangely compelling

Image: Canon

Canon has been making cameras for over 80 years, so you’d have thought it might have have tried every form factor under the sun by now. But a new patent for a ‘donut’-style mirrorless camera design suggests not – and it’s an oddly compelling idea.

The patent, which was spotted by the Japanese site Asibonet, shows a Canon EOS R3-style camera with an L-shaped hole in the middle of it – with the main benefit being a superior grip for photographers and videographers, whether they’re shooting in landscape or portrait.

According to the patent, the integrated grip would also basically eliminate the chance of you dropping the camera and also reduce the need for accessories like wrist straps. The latter are generally used by creators who like to shoot run-and-gun photos and videos of subjects like action sports.

Google is speeding up the reopening of closed tabs in Chrome

Google Chrome - Download the Fast, Secure Browser from Google
Image: Google

It’s something we’ve all done when trying to have a tidy up after a marathon tab session In Chrome. Overzealous closing of tabs (or particularly enthusiastic pressing of the Ctrl + W keyboard shortcut) means that it is all too easy to accidentally close a tab by accident.

Thankfully, it is very easy to reopen a tab that has been closed in error – Chrome actually gives you various ways to do this – but a new feature in the browser is going to help to speed up the process.

With a handy tab restoration keyboard shortcut already available (Ctrl + Shift + T), Google couldn’t do much to make it quicker to indicate a desire to restore a tab, so the company has developed a technique for speeding up the restoration.
