MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9000 flagship could compete with Qualcomm’s top-tier Snapdragon chips

Image: Mediatek

MediaTek has just announced its latest flagship processor: the Dimensity 9000, the company’s most powerful chip ever that looks like it should be able to go head to head with the best chips that more popular competitors like Qualcomm and Samsung offer.

Where previous top-tier Dimensity chips (like last year’s Dimensity 1000) were still less powerful than contemporaries like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 or Samsung’s Exynos 2100, the new Dimensity 9000 is coming out of the gate to make a case for 2022 Android flagships.

The new Dimensity 9000 is the first mobile chip to be built on TSMC’s 4nm process, in addition to using Arm’s new v9 architecture. It’s also the first announcement CPU to use Arm’s new core designs: a single Cortex-X2 performance core clocked at 3.05GHz, three Cortex-A710 cores at 2.85GHz, and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores at 1.8GHz. The GPU, meanwhile, is a 10-core Arm Mali-G710, along with MediaTek’s fifth-generation APU with six total cores for AI processing (which the company says offers four times the performance and power efficiency compared to its previous generation).

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 has received its Wi-Fi certification today, an important prerequisite for its official launch, which should hopefully happen soon.

The tablet was spotted at the Wi-Fi Alliance with the model number SM-X205. The listing confirms the Galaxy Tab A8 name, as well as the fact that it will support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Previously, it was found in the Geekbench database, and that listing revealed that it’s powered by the Unisoc T618 chipset. The device will run Android 11 out of the box, with One UI 3.0 on top.

According to past leaks, the Galaxy Tab A8 is to have a 10.5-inch 1920×1200 60 Hz LCD screen, an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, and a 5 MP front camera. RAM/storage versions will be 3+32GB, 4+64GB, and 4+128GB. The tablet packs a 7,040 mAh battery, and will be offered in gold, grey, and silver.

Samsung’s most affordable 5G smartphone inches closer to launch

Image: @onleaks

Right now, Samsung’s most affordable 5G smartphone is the Galaxy A22 5G, but the company will release a more affordable 5G smartphone next year. It was revealed three months ago that Samsung is working on the Galaxy A13 5G. Now, the smartphone has inched one step closer to its launch.

The design of the Galaxy A13 5G has been leaked already. It will reportedly launch in at least four color variants: black, blue, orange, and white. The smartphone uses the MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor, 4GB/6GB RAM, 64GB/128GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. It is expected to feature a 6.5-inch Infinity-V display.

At the rear, the upcoming 5G smartphone could have a triple-camera setup featuring a 50MP ISOCELL primary camera. It is said to be powered by a 5,000mAh battery and could support 25W fast charging. It also has a USB Type-C port, a headphone jack, and a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

The Xiaomi 12X could be an affordable flagship that’s smaller than anticipated

Image: Android Police

Xiaomi leaker Kacper Skrzypek has shared that the device surfaced online under model number 2112123AG, along with the codename “psyche.” Based on the name, the Xiaomi 12X is likely to be the successor to the Mi 11X which launched back in April 2021. While we don’t know where exactly the company will launch the new phone, Kacper says the device is not coming to India, which is a bit of surprise as the country was one of the few markets where the Mi 11X was released.

In terms of specifications, the Xiaomi 12X will reportedly pack a Snapdragon 870 processor, just like the Mi 11X. The phone is said to have an AMOLED screen measuring 145.4 x 65.4 mm which could be roughly around 6.28-inch diagonally, all while its predecessor has a much bigger 6.67-inch display. The new screen is said to support 120Hz, Full HD+, and HDR10. In the camera department, the device is tipped to feature a 50MP primary sensor, which is a minor upgrade from the 48MP optics on the Mi 11X 一 at least on paper.

MediaTek to demo Wi-Fi 7 at CES, touts 2.4x speed boost over Wi-Fi 6

Mediatek Wi-Fi 7 announcement
Image: Android Central

While we’ve only just begun to see an influx of Wi-Fi 6E routers in 2021, chip and modem companies are already hard at work on the next big thing. During MediaTek’s annual developer summit, the company announced it would demo a Wi-Fi 7 network at CES 2022.

James Chen, MediaTek’s Associate VP of Product Marketing, explained that Wi-Fi 7 would be 2.4 times faster than Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E — both of which are already incredibly fast by today’s standards.

But speed increases are only one of the future benefits of Wi-Fi 7. Chen also explained (without any concrete details) that this new standard will significantly reduce latency, which will help significantly for applications like gaming where every millisecond counts. And intriguingly, he said that Wi-Fi 7 would “play nice” with your neighbor’s Wi-Fi 7 networks, using new technology to reduce interference from signals outside of your home.

iPhone 14 Pro could ditch the Lightning port for USB-C

Image: Techradar

One of our ongoing complaints about the iPhone range is that it uses Apple’s proprietary Lightning cable, rather than USB-C, but there’s now a suggestion that Apple could switch to this more widespread format.

According to “several sources familiar with the matter” speaking to iDropNews, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max may have a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port.

Apparently this hasn’t been decided for sure yet, with Apple simply considering the switch.

Ahead of watchOS 8.2, which is currently in beta testing, Apple has released watchOS 8.1.1 for the Apple Watch Series 7. This update specifically addresses a problem with the Series 7 watch that prevented it from properly charging. This update may not appear if you are using an older series watch.

We haven’t heard widespread problems with the Apple Watch Series 7, though there have been sporadic issues with charging. Fast charging is one of the main new features of the Apple Watch Series 7, and some users have complained that it wasn’t working properly.

This time, a rumored MSI laptop has been benchmarked running on an Intel Core i7-12700H processor. Intel Alder Lake-P breezed through the tests, beating not just AMD, but also Apple’s pride and joy — the M1 Max chip.

Cinebench tested the Core i7-12700H in R20 and R23, including both single- and multi-core performance. It’s not a stretch to say that it performed excellently in both of those tests. In the Cinebench R20 test, Alder Lake scored 689 points in single-thread operations, beating previous-gen Intel by 12% and the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX by 21%.

Multi-core operations in Cinebench R20 also went well for Alder Lake-P, as it scored 7,158 points. This makes it 47% faster than AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX. As AMD has made a name for itself based on the superior multi-core performance offered by its processors, this kind of result might be a huge victory for Intel.

Intel Core i7-12700H didn’t just outperform the current generation of Ryzen CPUs, it also demolished Apple’s ultrafast M1 Max chip found in the 16-inch MacBook Pro — at least in this Cinebench R23 benchmark. While only multi-core operations have been published so far, the benchmark shows that Intel outperformed the M1 Max chip by a whopping 49%, scoring an impressive 18,501 points. All of these results bode well for Intel’s upcoming laptop releases.

Facebook gives users ‘more control’ over news feed

Image: Reuters

Facebook says it is introducing new features to give people more control over what appears in their news feeds. The social network has been under intense scrutiny in recent years for how its algorithms promote content. Now, it says it is testing controls to “adjust people’s ranking preferences” and customise the feed. That includes, for example, increasing the number of posts from friends and family, and decreasing those from groups and pages.

It will also make controls that already exist “easier to access”, it said – such as the favourites and snooze features, which largely live inside a settings sub-menu.

“We’ll begin testing in countries around the world to a small percentage of people, gradually expanding in the coming weeks,” Facebook said in its announcement post.
