The German federal government wants the European Union to require smartphone makers to promise at least seven years of security updates for their devices. As per Heise Online, Germany has also requested the European Union to make it mandatory for manufacturers to publish prices of spare parts and maintain the same prices for seven years.

As you would expect, smartphone makers aren’t too happy with the proposed legislation. DigitalEurope, which is an industry association with Samsung, Apple, and Huawei as its members, wants regulators to make three years of security updates the norm for everyone.

Currently, most Android phones and tablets receive security updates for three years or less. The only Android devices that are guaranteed to receive four years of security updates are the best Android phones from Samsung and OnePlus. Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 series phones, however, are rumored to get up to five years of Android updates.

Apple Watch Series 7 Launch

Apple might soon announce the iPhone 13 launch event date, with various pundits already eying September 14th as the potential date for the keynote. After last year’s exceptional October iPhone 12 event, Apple is returning to its regular schedule.

This year, Apple is widely expected to launch the iPhone 13 and Apple Watch Series 7 together. But distinct sources reported a few days ago that Apple has run into unexpected manufacturing issues with the latter. This led to speculation that the Apple Watch Series 7 could see delays if Apple can’t fix the production issues on time.

Indian customers will love the Galaxy S22 if latest rumor is true

Image: Sammobile

As usual, the Galaxy S22 series is expected to feature an Exynos SoC in some regions and a chipset from Qualcomm in others. History tells us that the Exynos 2200 variant will go on sale in most markets, while the Snapdragon 898-powered models will be reserved for a few key regions such as the USA. However, Samsung might not follow the same strategy as before, and the Snapdragon variant could become available in more markets, including India.

Samsung is reportedly in the process of deciding which chipset goes inside the Galaxy S22 series in what regions. And according to @FrontTron citing Clien, the Snapdragon 898 SoC is “highly likely” to be used by the Galaxy S22 series in India.

This would be a first for the Indian market. So far, every Galaxy flagship released in India was powered by Exynos chipsets, but next year we might witness a big change in this philosophy.

Google Pixel 3 phones are bricking out of nowhere, the list is growing

Google Pixel 3 phones are bricking out of nowhere, the list is growing
Image: Gsmarena

Users in support forums, Reddit and other social channels share their stories of how their trusty Pixel 3s are getting bricked overnight without any warning at all. The devices enter a Qualcomm Emergency Download Mode (EDL), which won’t even let you install a new ROM at all – getting to the bootloader is impossible.

Some believe that one of the security updates caused this, while others say that a hardware malfunction is the root cause, similar to LG’s bootlooping problem from back in the day. Either way, without Google’s official statement, it’s anyone’s guess what is bricking these phones.

Data from app monitoring firm App Annie indicates that average time per user spent on the apps is higher for TikTok, indicating high levels of engagement.

App Annie characterised TikTok as having “upended the streaming and social landscape”.

However, YouTube retains the top spot for overall time spent – not per user – as it has many more users overall.

The Google-owned video giant has an estimated two billion monthly users, while TikTok’s most recent public figures suggested it had about 700 million in mid-2020.
