Live in India? Like Samsung flagships but hate Samsung Exynos chipsets? This will make you very happy!

According to a prolific India-based tipster, the upcoming Galaxy S22 family will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC in India. Time to rejoice, Snapdragon fans, as this is definitely not the norm.

Previous flagship Samsung families arrived in India with Exynos chipsets, but that all changes this year – if this rumor turns out to have been correct, of course. Anyway, we’ll find out in less than 48 hours as the official unveiling of the series is scheduled for February 9.

Mark your calendars! Motorola’s flagship is going global on this date

Motorola Moto Edge X30

Motorola was the first OEM to launch a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 smartphone in the form of the Moto Edge X30. However, the phone’s availability has been limited to China until now. It looks like that’s finally about to change as the company is teasing an upcoming global announcement just ahead of MWC 2022.

Moto is preparing for a February 24 global launch. The Twitter teaser all but confirms that the Edge X30 is set to step out of China. It’s unclear if Motorola will launch a whole spate of devices or if it’ll be just one phone.

Nevertheless, we hear that the Moto Edge X30 will gain a new name when it goes global. The device could be called the Moto Edge 30 Pro while retaining the same specs as its Chinese counterpart. That means you’ll get the latest Qualcomm chipset, a 6.7-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, a triple rear camera setup with two 50MP shooters and a 2MP sensor, a 5,000mAh battery, and 68W charging.

You should also get plenty of RAM and storage as the phone tops out with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

As far as pricing is concerned, the Moto Edge X30 starts at 2,999 Chinese yuan (~$471) and goes up to 3,399 yuan (~$533) for the variants with a display cutout. The one with an under-display camera costs 3,999 yuan (~$627). Global prices will most likely vary but should be in the same ballpark.

Poco M4 Pro 5G coming to India on February 15

Xiaomi launched the Poco M4 Pro 5G smartphone back in November 2021. It started at €199 for select markets around Europe, and three months later it will finally reach stores in India.

The Twitter account of Poco India revealed the phone will be launched on February 15, and it is a real launch that will allow users to “step up their game”.

The Poco M4 Pro 5G is a dual-camera phone, despite the setup trying to portray itself as something more. It is powered by a Dimensity 810 chipset with 5G capabilities, and when we reviewed the phone, we established it is an honest versatile device that offers exactly what it promises.

There is a large 6.6” LCD with a high refresh rate, outstanding battery and dependable performance. Photos turn out great, and there are enough connectivity options for everyone’s likes.

We have to wait a week for Xiaomi to launch the Poco M4 Pro 5G to see how much would it cost in India – we assume it will be around INR16,999 (or even cheaper), which is the equivalent of €199 for a 4/64 GB memory option.

Nubia Red Magic 7 could be 2022’s best gaming phone and it’s coming soon

Image: Future

February is proving a busy month for smartphone launches, and Nubia has joined the fray, as it has announced its Red Magic 7 family of gaming phones will come along on February 17.

The company announced this via Weibo, a Chinese social media site that lots of brands from the country use for announcements.

Other than the launch date, something stands out about the post: the Red Magic 7 is referred to as a ‘series’, suggesting more than one gaming phone is coming. Leaks suggest at least one phone could have 165W powering, which is staggeringly fast, and both are slated to use the top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset.

Nubia’s Red Magic phones tend to be mid-range alternatives to pricier gaming handsets from Asus or Lenovo – while we don’t list the Red Magic 6 at the top of our rankings of the best mobiles for games, it was this writer’s personal favorite from 2021, so we’re looking forward to the next-gen version.

MacBook Pro With Next-Gen M2 Chip Coming Next Month, Supply Chain Report Claims

Image: Apple

DigiTimes reports that Apple’s supply chain partners kept production lines running during the Lunar New Year holiday for the new MacBook Pro, which is set to launch in “early March,” according to the publication’s industry sources:

Apple reportedly will release a spate of new devices in early March, including new MacBook Pro adopting the latest M2 processor, budget-level 5G iPhone SE and iPad, the sources said. Except for the processor, most other components used in the new MacBook Pro reportedly will feature almost the same specs as those for existing model featuring M1 chips, leading MacBook Pro supply chain partners to maintain production during the week-long Lunar New Year holiday to satisfy increasing demand for Mac series, the sources continued.

Although the report doesn’t mention the exact size of MacBook Pro, the only “Pro” model with the original M1 chip is the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Apple is believed to be working on an updated version of this machine, which was positively received when it launched back in November 2020.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 Is Finally Gaining Google Assistant… Soonish

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4
Image: Samsung

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 was an exciting development in Android smartwatches because it brought Samsung and Google together to make Google’s watch software platform better. But, weirdly, the best Android watch lacked a major Android feature: Google Assistant. Samsung today said that’s about to change.

The last time Samsung offered direct access to Google on your wrist was the Samsung Gear Live in 2014, which ran on Google’s Android Wear platform and featured a rectangle watch face. After that, Samsung switched to its proprietary Tizen software for its watches, and thereby its own Bixby assistant. But last year, Samsung announced it was returning to Android Wear, now known as Wear OS 3. But Google Assistant was nowhere to be found—watch owners have had to rely on Bixby for months now. Annoyingly, Samsung still hasn’t committed to a timeline for adding Google Assistant, saying only that it would arrive in the “coming months.”

NVIDIA will not purchase Arm. The news was confirmed by SoftBank (PDF), the owners of Arm, in a statement. Initially, NVIDIA agreed to acquire Arm for $40 billion, but both companies have decided to terminate the deal as it ran into significant pushback from multiple regulatory bodies. The Financial Times first reported the deal falling through.

“Nvidia and [SoftBank Group] have agreed to terminate the agreement on February 8, 2022 because of significant regulatory challenges preventing the consummation of the transaction, despite good faith efforts by the parties,” said SoftBank in a statement.

SoftBank has already begun preparations to publicly list Arm within the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2022. This was anticipated by many experts and politicians. Several members of Parliament in the UK called for SoftBank to list Arm on the London Stock Exchange rather than in New York. SoftBank’s statement does not specify where it plans to publicly list Arm. Before being purchased by SoftBank, Arm was listed on the London Stock Exchange.

While the deal ultimately did not go through, SoftBank will make some money out of the saga. “In accordance with the terms of the agreement, the deposit of $1.25 billion (¥143.8 billion) received by [SoftBank Group Capital] at the time of signing is non-refundable and therefore such amount will be recognized as profit in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022.”

Google faces $2.4 billion suit for prioritizing Shopping in search results

Image: Android Police

Google can’t catch a break in Europe. It currently has three major cases pending in the EU with nearly $10 billion in fines swinging over its head like a financial sword of Damocles. Back in November it lost a major appeal worth $2.8 billion to the General Court of the EU. Google appealed this decision with the EU’s highest court last month. Despite these ongoing legal shenanigans, at least one Google Shopping competitor believes that Google isn’t abiding by the court’s decisions and has decided to sue the company for over $2 billion.

The company in question is the Sweden-based price comparison service PriceRunner. It alleges Google’s actions from 2008 to 2020 have cost the company 22 billion kronor ($2.41 billion). But, since Google’s alleged violation is ongoing, PriceRunner expects to be awarded even more as the case proceeds. Further, it is including 8% annual interest on the damages it is seeking. Because it expects this case to take “several years” to resolve, the final award could be much higher.
