OnePlus 10RT gets certified on its way to India

Image: Gsmarena

Last year the OnePlus 9R was followed by the 9RT a few months down the line, and we have all the reasons to believe that the same will happen this year. The OnePlus 10R launched in April, and the 10RT may be coming in the fall (as the 9RT did in 2021).

The OnePlus 10RT has now seemingly received the necessary BIS certifications which will allow it to be sold in India. This process was undertaken for a OnePlus device with the model number CPH2413, which is widely assumed to be the OnePlus 10RT.

Fossil working with Google to make its new companion app compatible with Wear OS 3

Image: Fossil

Following the Wear OS 3 transition for smart wearables has been interesting to follow and with every new piece of information, we can slowly make out what the big picture will look like for Wear OS. The latest information comes from Fossil, a popular Wear OS smartwatch OEM.

As per a Reddit thread, a Fossil representative has provided an update as to the state of Fossil smartwatches with a recent overhaul to the smartwatch UI and the newly released Fossil companion app. There’s also a note about the transition towards some of the smartwatches receiving a Wear OS 3 update and new devices coming with the new software.

The mention of Fossil watches getting Wear OS 3 “later this year” aligns with the timeframe that was offered nearly a year ago of H2 2022.

u/FossilGuy1111 explains the motivation behind the new app was mostly that a new app would make it easier to retire old features and implement new feedback received from Fossil’s users. The new app brings a newly designed UI with simpler interface, and it prepares the brands’ smartwatches to support Wear OS 3 on current and future wearables.

Apple reportedly cutting first wave of iPhone 14 orders by 10%

Image: Jon Prosser

Getting your hands on the new iPhone on launch day is always a challenge, but it might be even more difficult than usual this year. DigiTimes reports that Apple is cutting its iPhone 14 orders by 10% due to supply chain disruptions.

Semiconductor industry sources tell DigiTimes that three massive TSMC customers recently adjusted their orders. As a result, Apple has reduced its shipment target of 90 million units for the first wave by 10%. Apple has reportedly already begun mass production of its next flagship phone, but there will be nine million fewer units available this fall.

BMW is the latest to adopt Android Automotive

Image: BMW

Google’s Android Automotive OS has been gaining traction in the industry, and this week, BMW announced it will be adopting the platform for some future vehicles. The company plans to develop their BMW Operating System 8 infotainment software using Android Automotive for some vehicle models beginning in March 2023 but also maintain the current Linux-based version for others.

BMW Group’s lead developer for the digital driving experience, Stephan Durach, said it’s about having a second technological approach. “We are integrating the best aspects of all worlds — that could be our own in-house developments, Open Source or commercial software products, depending on what the specific solution looks like,” said Durach.

Android Automotive is a full-on vehicular operating system that can be embedded into car infotainment and instrument clusters. Not to be confused with Android Auto, which is Google’s phone-to-dash connection system equivalent to Apple’s CarPlay.

You’ll soon be able to pay for gas through Apple CarPlay and iOS 16

Apple CarPlay is getting an innovative new feature in the not-too-distant future: it’s going to give drivers the ability to pay for gas right from their car’s infotainment screen, making the process more convenient and straightforward than ever.

While the upgrade was mentioned by Apple at WWDC 2022, we now have some more specifics. Reuters reports that HF Sinclair, which sells its fuel at 1,600 stations in the US, is planning to support CarPlay purchases later this year.

There are a few caveats: at the moment we’ve not heard anything about support for the feature outside of the US, and it won’t go live until iOS 16 is released to the public. That should happen in September, when we’ll also be treated to the iPhone 14 launch.

TikTok commits to changes to avoid App Store ban

The commissioner called TikTok a “sophisticated surveillance tool,” saying that the app serves as a data-gathering tool for the Chinese authorities.

“It is clear that TikTok poses an unacceptable national security risk due to its extensive data harvesting being combined with Beijing’s apparently unchecked access to that sensitive data,” FCC commissioner Brendan Carr wrote in the letter addressed to Apple and Google.

In its response today, ByteDance confirmed that some employees do need “have access to TikTok U.S. user data.” It went on to clarify, however, that these employees are “subject to a series of robust cybersecurity controls and authorization approval protocols overseen by our U.S.-based security team.”

As noted by Reuters, however, ByteDance also committed to making changes that will “fully safeguard user data and U.S. national security interests.” The company said that it is in the process of finalizing “new advanced data security controls” in partnership with Oracle.

ByteDance migrated US user data to Oracle servers last month, but the company still sues data centers in the US and Singapore for backups. Once this agreement is finalized, TIkTok says it will “delete U.S. users’ protected data from our own systems and fully pivot to Oracle cloud servers located in the U.S.”

“We look forward to connecting with members of Congress to discuss the substance of our letter,” TikTok wrote in its response today.

FCC clears SpaceX to put its Starlink satellite WiFi in vehicles

SpaceX’s satellite internet service is officially going mobile after the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday authorized the company to provide its Starlink WiFi service to vehicles. SpaceX already offers Starlink home internet, which left beta last October.

“We agree with SpaceX… that the public interest would benefit by granting with conditions their applications,” The FCC wrote in its authorization letter. “Authorizing a new class of terminals for SpaceX’s satellite system will expand the range of broadband capabilities to meet the growing user demands that now require connectivity while on the move, whether driving an RV across the country, moving a freighter from Europe to a U.S. port, or while on a domestic or international flight.”

Starlink had already begun expanding its terrestrial footprint, even before the FCC decision, installing receiver dishes at Tesla Supercharger stations, raising prices and unveiling a $500/month Premium service tier. SpaceX has also recently announced partnerships with Delta and Hawaiian Airlines to potentially offer the service aboard their aircraft.

GM is ramping up Hummer EV production to address huge order backlog

Image: GMC

General Motors has only been producing up to a dozen electric Hummers a day in its Detroit factory, according to The Wall Street Journal, and that’s far from ideal when the automaker has over 70,000 reservations. As The Drive notes, it would take GM 17 years to be able to fulfill all its orders at that pace. A GM spokesperson told The Journal, though, that the company’s output will increase sharply in the second half of the year. They said production has been slower than usual for the vehicle, because it was developed from scratch and was built on top the company’s new Ultium EV platform. The global supply chain shortage that’s been affecting the tech and auto industries may have also contributed to the issue.

In the coming months, the automaker expects to fulfill deliveries at a much faster pace, particularly after it switches from using outsourced LG battery cells. GM aims to start manufacturing its own battery cells later this summer in its new factory in Ohio built in partnership with LG. The company has been building multiple Ultium factories in the US over the past year, including one in Tennessee and another in Michigan in addition to its Ohio plant, as part of its efforts to achieve its goal of making more than a million EVs in the US every year by the end of 2025. One of its short-term goals, however, is likely being able to supply the batteries its Hummer EVs need. That battery makes up a third of the vehicle’s weight, The Drive says, and is made up of materials that are high in demand.
