The Xiaomi Mi Band 7 Pro goes official with its smartwatch-like design

Image: MI

The Mi Band 7 Pro bears some resemblance to the Redmi Smart Band Pro but with a larger 1.64-inch always-on AMOLED screen (326 PPI) as compared to the 1.47-inch display. There’s also a premium metal body here, and the combination of that and the big screen sure make it seem almost like a full-featured smartwatch.

Expectedly, the new wearable shares some of its functionality with the smaller Mi Band 7, including the ability to monitor/track blood oxygen, sleep, heart rate, etc (via XDA). Xiaomi says the Mi Band 7 Pro offers over 180 watch faces out of the box and can track a whopping 117 sports modes, covering outdoor and indoor activities. Just like we heard rumored, GPS is now built-in, and 5ATM water resistance means it can also survive some swimming, provided you don’t go deeper than 50 meters underwater.

HTC A101 tablet launches w/ 10.1-inch LCD display, Unisoc chip, 8GB RAM, more

The HTC A100 comes with a 10.1-inch LCD display at 1,920 x 1,200 pixels with chunky bezels on all sides of the screen. There is room for a 5-megapixel selfie camera in the top bezel, while a dual rear camera setup consists of a 13-megapixel main sensor and 2-megapixel ultra-wide.

As a budget device, it comes with internals to help keep the costs low. The HTC A101 utilizes the Unisoc Tiger T618 processor and comes with 8GB RAM. While modest, these core internals actually surpass the impressive Nokia T20, which although not perfect is good enough for content consumption and basic web browsing.

Base storage is set at 128GB with microSD card expansion also available for added peace of mind and further file management possible. There’s also room for a 3.5mm headphone port, while biometric unlocking is made possible via software-based Face Unlock.

A sizeable 7,000mAh battery is tucked away inside and is charged via USB-C port at the bottom of the HTC A101. However, charge speeds have not been disclosed. Android 11 comes pre-installed but HTC has not confirmed just what the update schedule the device will adhere to here either. Two colors are available: space gray and moon silver.

Samsung Q2 operating profit to rise thanks to strong memory chip sales

Image: Sammobile

Samsung is expected to announce its Q2 earnings guidance on Thursday, and market watchers estimate that the company’s operating profit for the second quarter rose more than 15% from a year ago. A new survey suggests that Samsung enjoyed a bump in sales and net income in the second quarter of 2022, though some of its divisions have underperformed.

Samsung’s Q2 performance was helped by its memory chip business and strong demand for chips used in data centers and servers. The chipset division is forecast to grow 42% and report 9.8 trillion won ($7.4 billion) in operating profit. (via Yonhap News)

Twitter sues India’s government over content takedown orders

Image: Nina Riggio / Bloomberg / Getty Images

Twitter has sued the Indian government to challenge some of its block orders on tweets and accounts, further escalating the tension between the American social giant and New Delhi.

In its lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Karnataka High Court, Twitter alleges that New Delhi has abused its power by ordering it to arbitrarily and disproportionately remove several tweets from its platform, a source familiar with the matter said.

The lawsuit follows a rough year and a half for Twitter in India, a key overseas market for the firm, where it has been asked to takedown hundreds of accounts and tweets, many of which critics argue were objected because they denounced the Indian government’s policies and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India’s Tata Motors wants to sell 50,000 EVs by end of fiscal year

Image: Tata

Mumbai-based automaker Tata Motors wants to sell 50,000 electric vehicles by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, the company’s chairperson Natarajan Chandrasekaran said during a shareholders’ meeting on Monday.

In the 2023/24 period, Tata — which produces passenger cars, trucks, vans, coaches, buses, luxury cars, and construction equipment — aims to hit 100,000 EV sales, according to Chandrasekaran, as reported by Reuters.

The push towards EVs follows a national plan to ensure that up to 30% of total passenger car sales in India are electric by 2030, up from about 1% today. E-scooters and e-bikes will account for 80% of two-wheeler sales, up from 2% today. Given the Indian government’s high import duties on EVs, getting citizens to make the switch to electric will largely depend on the success of local production.
