Apple might include older chips on non-Pro iPhones from now on to push higher-end sales

Apple is a business — not a non-profit organization. This means its ultimate goal is maximizing the revenue it makes. Just like other corporations, the Cupertino tech giant finds creative ways to achieve this aim. A potentially upcoming strategy, though, might piss off many non-Pro iPhone fans. A lot of people can’t justify paying the premium price tag of a Pro iPhone model. After all, these iPhone variants typically only include a better camera system when compared to regular ones. Of course, sometimes there are more tempting additions, like the ProMotion 120Hz technology. However, plenty of users still find the regular models just fine. In an attempt to push higher-end sales, Apple could be including previous-gen chips on non-Pro iPhones from now on. This would further distinguish between the two iPhone types and potentially tempt undecided customers to go for the more expensive model.

iPhone 14 screen reprieve for Chinese company BOE after cheating incident

Image: Apple

Chinese display manufacturer BOE has been given the go-ahead for iPhone 14 screen production, despite having been caught cheating by Apple.

The company changed the specs of the displays it was making for the iPhone 13, but this was detected by the Cupertino company – which ordered BOE to cease production. Apple’s reason for the change of heart may be a cynical one …

Intel’s 14th-gen CPUs could arrive soon after Raptor Lake, keeping pressure on AMD

Image: Future

Intel’s 7nm chips – built on what’s known as the Intel 4 process, and including 14th-gen Meteor Lake processors – are on track to hit volume production in the second half of 2022, according to a new report.

The article from DigiTimes claims that H2 2022 remains on target for the 7nm silicon and that this is the case going by sources within Intel itself.

While rumors from DigiTimes usually need more seasoning added than your average piece of buzz from the grapevine in our experience, in this case, the speculation seems more likely to be on the money due to the fact that Intel has already claimed as recently as last month that Intel 4 is on schedule for later this year.

It’s obviously good to hear that reaffirmed in a fashion, and we could take it as a positive sign that Meteor Lake – which will be the generation to follow next-gen Raptor Lake CPUs – isn’t going to be late (and indeed the other silicon which will be based on Intel 4, such as Granite Rapids for servers).

Naturally, none of this is a guarantee that Intel may not still hit stumbling blocks with Meteor Lake, but things appear to be consistently smooth sailing for the time being.

Rockstar Games Focusing on GTA 6 After GTA Trilogy Mishap, Report Says

Image: Rockstar Games

Development for Grand Theft Auto 6 might receive more resources thanks to the issues from last year’s Grand Theft Auto Trilogy, according to a report Tuesday from Kotaku.

Rockstar Games reportedly planned to remaster Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption, two of its best-selling and critically acclaimed titles. However, things changed sometime after the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which included remasters of GTA 3, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas. Due to the GTA Trilogy performing so poorly, Rockstar has reportedly switched gears and shelved the remakes while putting its focus on GTA 6.

EU tightens the leash on Google, Apple, Meta with sweeping new digital laws

The European Union (EU) has given the final seal of approval to two landmark pieces of legislation designed to curb the power of the world’s largest technology firms.

The first to come into effect will be the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which is designed to prevent so-called “gatekeepers” from abusing their dominant position to squeeze competitors out of markets such as search, browsersmessaging and email. These new rules will apply from early 2023 onwards.

The Digital Services Act (DSA), meanwhile, aims to limit the spread of illegal content and disinformation on digital platforms, in addition to outlawing certain manipulative advertising practices. The conditions of the DSA will start to be enforced roughly one year later.

Both proposals flew through their respective votes with the support of an overwhelming majority.

India’s anti-money laundering agency raided more than 40 offices of Chinese phone-maker Vivo across the country on Tuesday over allegations of money laundering, the latest in a series of developments illustrating the growing murky relationship between New Delhi and firms of China origin.

The Enforcement Directorate searched Vivo’s offices across the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, according to local media reports.

In a statement, a Vivo spokesperson told TechCrunch that the firm was cooperating with the authorities.

“Vivo India is cooperating with the authorities to provide them with all required information. As a responsible corporate, we are committed to being fully compliant with laws in India,” the spokesperson said, without elaborating details of ED’s proceedings.
