September 7’s iPhone 14 launch is just the start of an avalanche of Apple releases

Image: IDG

September is always a huge month for Apple fans. It’s usually the month in which the new iPhones are unveiled, along with the new Apple Watch. This year, that means the iPhone 14 lineup and the Apple Watch Series 8, a refreshed Apple Watch SE, and a brand new Apple Watch Pro.

It’s also when the new operating systems start to exit their beta cycles and are generally available to the public. We’ll get iOS 16 and watchOS 9, but iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura probably won’t land until October.

Of course, there’s the usual services updates as well–weekly releases for Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade–and there’s always a chance that Apple will unveil some other new products at its September 7 ‘Far out’ event.

Asus ROG Phone 6D specs revealed in leak

Image: 91Mobiles

If you are not in the loop already, we are currently waiting on a new ROG Phone 6D Ultimate scheduled to arrive on September 19. By all accounts it will be joined by a vanilla version, which, in typical Asus fashion, we expect to be identical to the Ultimate, sans memory options. This was recently confirmed once again by a social network post from a reputable industry source.

The post seems to be referring to the vanilla ROG Phone 6D or perhaps both phones interchangeably. It reaffirms that the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chipset will power both phones – a fact already teased by Asus. The phones will also share a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, with an anticipated 165Hz refresh rate. Also on the hardware list – a Sony IMX 766 50MP main camera and a 6,000 mAh battery split into two cells with 65W charging support.

Beyond a chipset swap from Qualcomm to MediaTek, the new Dimensity ROG Phone 6D models will also feature what Asus is calling the best cooling solution ever on a ROG Phone. The leak mentions that as well, talking highly of the setup whatever it turns out to be.

Last but not least, it is also worth noting that rumors have also been hinting at a hefty overclock on the Cortex-X2 core inside the Dimensity 9000+ chipset in the new ROG Phone 6D phones. Presumably thanks to its advanced thermal solution. We’re looking forward to more info on that front too.

Realme C33 is arriving on September 6, design and key specs revealed

The Realme Watch 3 Pro that was supposed to be unveiled on August 18 alongside the 9i 5G will be introduced on September 6. But that won’t be the only product Realme will unveil next Tuesday since the company today announced it will also launch the C33 on September 6.

However, it appears both products will have different events since the C33’s event will begin at 12PM IST, whereas the Watch 3 Pro’s event will start at 12:30PM IST. Realme’s events usually begin at 12:30PM local time in India, so chances are the company will introduce the C33 in multiple markets simultaneously like the 9i 5G.

iPhone 14 Pro Status Bar Rumored to Include Classic Battery Indicator

Image: Macrumors

Apple plans to bring the classic iOS battery indicator back to the status bar directly on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max, taking full advantage of the added screen space at the top of the display thanks to a new pill-shaped notch replacement.

According to information shared with MacRumors and images posted on the MacRumors forums, Apple will bring back the classic iOS battery indicator to the status bar of the upcoming ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌, which will include the battery percentage and battery icon separate from each other.

While Apple brought the battery percentage back to the status bar in an iOS 16 beta, the battery percentage is placed inside the battery icon and is not separated from it due to limited space at the top of the display.

Android 14 to support satellite communications in time for the Pixel 8

Image: Google

We’ve heard whispers that Apple might be adding satellite support to the iPhone 14 in order to keep users connected wherever they are – and now it would seem that Google has similar plans for its software and hardware in 2023.

This comes from senior vice president of Android Hiroshi Lockheimer (via XDA Developers), who says that his team is “designing for satellites” and will be “enabling all of this in the next version of Android” – which will be Android 14.

Android 13 just started rolling out, so Android 14 should be coming next year. If the software support is there for accessing services via satellite networks, then presumably it’s a feature that could make its way into the Google Pixel 8 later on in 2023.

Netflix’s ad-supported tier could go live on November 1

Image: XDA

It looks like Netflix is feeling the heat, as there are reports that it’s moving up the release of its ad-supported to November. The company is pushing for an earlier release date, in part, to debut ahead of the ad-supported offering from Disney Plus, which is set to launch on December 8.

Netflix was originally planning to debut its new service tier in 2023, with a soft rollout planned towards the end of 2022. But now, plans have changed, with the company set to debut the service in multiple regions on November 1. According to Variety, its source states that the service will be available in the United States, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany. If it is able to launch early, it would have a little over a month’s head start against Disney’s December 8 launch. Netflix did not confirm these plans with Variety, only stating that it was working on the service and did not have concrete plans in place with regard to its launch.

Samsung Customer Information Stolen in Data Breach

Image: James Martin/CNET

Samsung said Friday that the personal information of some of its customers was stolen from its US computer systems earlier this year.

In a notice to customers, the South Korea-based tech giant said that in July an unauthorized person acquired information from the systems. In early August, Samsung determined through its investigation that some customer data was compromised.

The company said it has since secured the affected systems, hired an outside cybersecurity firm and is working with law enforcement.

The customer data stolen may have included names, contact and demographic information, dates of birth and product registration information, Samsung says. More personal data such as Social Security numbers and payment card information wasn’t compromised.

Samsung didn’t disclose how many customers were affected, but said it’s in the process of notifying those that were.

Researchers train AI to predict EV battery degradation

Image: TNW

In a recent study funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program, a team of scientists took the research a step further by comparing the accuracy of two algorithms on the wide spectrum of commercial lithium-ion battery chemistries.

Specifically, they drew calendar ageing data from six types of battery cell chemistries: Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LCO), Lithium Iron Phosphate (LIP), Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO), Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO), Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide (NCA), and Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC).

These battery cells were calendar aged in temperature chambers at 50, 60, and 70 degrees Celsius, using high, medium, and low voltages.

To predict ageing, the team investigated the efficiency of two machine learning algorithms: Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and an artificial neural network (ANN).

India’s central bank gives lenders November-end ultimatum to comply with new digital loan rules

Image: Pexels

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given lenders until the end of November to implement adequate systems and processes to ensure that new and existing loans comply with its digital loan rules issued last month.

The RBI’s move follows several reports highlighting issues of customers facing torture and abuse from agents of digital loan apps in the country. As we’ve reported, in some cases, customers failed to bear the psychological burden given by threat actors and committed suicide.

Based on the recommendations of a working group set up in 2021, the guidelines spelt out who can lend to borrowers in the country, what all data lenders can access and mandated expanding the disclosure requirements to provide more customer transparency and control.

On Friday, the RBI said that the guidelines should apply to both existing customers availing fresh loans and new customers getting onboarded.

The central bank has given time until November 30 to all regulated entities, which are licensed by the regulator, to ensure that the existing digital loans are also in compliance with the new rules “in both letter and spirit.”

“These directions are issued under sections 21, 35A and 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, sections 45JA, 45L and 45M of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, sections 30A and 32 of the National Housing Bank Act, 1987, section 6 of the Factoring Regulation Act, 2011 and section 11 of the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005,” the RBI said in its letter addressed to all commercial and co-operative banks and non-banking financial companies including housing finance companies.

Insulin in a Tab? Scientists in Canada Are a Step Closer

Image: Getty Images

A team of scientists in Canada say they’re a major step closer to creating an easy-to-take oral insulin tablet. In new research, they found that rats dosed with their dissolvable tablet seem to absorb the insulin the same way they do when given a typical insulin shot. Should their work pay off, it could lead to a more cost-effective treatment, or at least one that’s less painful for many diabetics.

It’s been more than a century since insulin was first isolated and later synthesized as a medication for people who need it to manage their blood sugar (people with type 1 diabetes need to take it their entire lives, since they cannot produce the hormone on their own, while many with type 2 will need it as their illness progresses). In all that time, the basic method of insulin delivery via direct injection hasn’t changed. There are now auto-injectable pens that can ease this process, but these formulations still cause some discomfort, and they’re often more expensive than other versions of insulin.
