Asus packs 12-core Intel i7 into a Raspberry Pi-sized board

Image: Asus’s Aaeon GENE-ADP6 industrial SBC

If you’ve ever thought to yourself these single board computers (SBC) could use a few more cores, Asus’ Aaeon latest system might be right up your alley.

The biz’s GENE-ADP6, announced this week, can pack as much as a 12-core/16-thread Intel processor with Iris Xe graphics into a 3.5-inch form factor. The diminutive system is aimed at machine-vision applications and can be configured with your choice of Intel silicon including Celeron, or Core i3, i5, or a choice of 10 or 12-core i7 processors.

As with other SBCs we’ve seen from Aaeon and others, the processors aren’t socketed so you won’t be upgrading later. This device is pretty much aimed at embedded and industrial use, mind.

All five SKUs are powered by Intel’s current-gen Alder Lake mobile processor family, including a somewhat unusual 5-core Celeron processor that pairs a single performance core with four efficiency cores. However, only the i5 and i7 SKUs come equipped with Intel’s Iris Xe integrated graphics. The i3 and Celeron are stuck on UHD graphics.

Intel reveals official Arc Alchemist specs, and there’s one major surprise

Image: Intel

After quite a long wait, Intel didn’t hold back and told us most of the things we need to know about its discrete GPUs. Three graphics cards are on the way, and all three will utilize the same top-of-the-line ACM-G10 Alchemist GPU die. While we knew about the Arc A770 and A750 and got to see their performance in various videos with Intel’s Ryan Shrout and Tom Petersen, the Arc A580 was always a bit of an enigma in comparison, overshadowed by its two better siblings.

First, we have the flagship Arc A770, featuring the full 32 Xe-Cores and 32 ray tracing units. It will come in both 16GB and 8GB memory versions and offer maximum memory bandwidth of 560Gbps. The GPU has a 256-bit bus interface and a clock speed of 2.1GHz, powered by a TDP of 225 watts.

The Arc A770 is expected to be a rival to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, and if all goes well, it might even offer better performance than the Nvidia offering. Of course, the performance metrics will differ from game to game depending on the API — Intel GPUs shine when DirectX 12 and Vulkan are involved, but may have a hard time with DX11/9 games.

Next is the Arc A750. While it runs on the same ACM-G10 GPU die, it comes with 28 Xe-Cores and 28 ray tracing units. Just like the Arc A770, it features a 256-bit memory bus and the same 225-watt TDP. However, it will max out at 8GB memory, a clock speed of 2,050MHz, and an effective bandwidth of 512Gbps. This graphics card will be positioned against Nvidia’s RTX 3060.

Both of these graphics cards will be released in Limited Edition versions (which is Intel’s own design) and custom flavors prepared by Intel’s yet-unnamed board partners. Intel won’t be releasing any more powerful GPUs in the Arc Alchemist lineup, so Nvidia’s and AMD’s high-end graphics cards can rest easy.

Don’t expect QHD+ screens for Galaxy S23, S23 Plus next year

Image: Android Authority

We’ve already heard a few Galaxy S23 series rumors in the last few months, but a frequent tipster has now given us apparent screen details and dimensions for Samsung’s 2023 flagship phones.

Leaker Ice Universe posted Galaxy S23 series screen details on Weibo (h/t: GSMArena), asserting that the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus will have 6.1-inch and 6.6-inch screen sizes respectively. Unfortunately for those hoping for a return to QHD+ resolutions, the tipster claims that both phones will have FHD+ screens (2,340 × 1,080).

Meanwhile, the leaker adds that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will maintain a 6.8-inch screen with a QHD+ resolution (3,088 x 1,440).

Samsung trademarks ‘Flex G’ dual-folding smartphone-tablet hybrid

You may or may not recall the Flex G and Flex S concept foldable devices Samsung showcased at CES 2022, but you can find our hands-on video below in case you want to refresh your memory. In short, the Flex S and Flex G are dual-folding phone-tablet hybrid concepts designed by Samsung Display to demonstrate other form factors achievable by foldable technology beyond the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip and book-like Galaxy Z Fold. And if you’re wondering, we’re bringing up these concepts today because Samsung has just trademarked the “Flex G” name in South Korea.

Samsung Display also trademarked the “S Flex” name at KIPRIS last year in July. The Flex G is now joining in, and both names are categorized under the same classification at the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service. And the company experimented with even larger foldable devices, such as the Flex Note concept. It is possible that the latter will join the other two other “Flex” devices at KIPRIS soon.

Nvidia RTX 4090 leak suggests a powerful GPU that could be a nightmare for PC builders

Nvidia’s RTX 4090 graphics card is the subject of a fresh benchmark leak showing that it could be nippy indeed, if the spillage is genuine, of course.

Arm yourself with plentiful skepticism, then, particularly as the source is the Chiphell forums (over in China) – an outlet which has certainly provided some useful info in the past, but not one of the most reliable in our experience.

At any rate, the benchmark shown in this case came with photographic evidence, which has now been deleted, but not before it was captured and shared by HXL on Twitter (via VideoCardz).

It’s a Time Spy Extreme score (from the 3DMark suite) which shows an unnamed GPU – but given all the other info provided by the leaker, like a power consumption of 450W, it must surely be the RTX 4090 – hitting 20,192, which is a decent chunk more than a past rumor indicated. That previously leaked Time Spy score of 19,000 for the RTX 4090 appeared a couple of months back.

That’s the graphics score, by the way, and in this case the overall score is below-par because of the test rig which the RTX 4090 is running in (including a Core i5-12400F processor).

Another interesting point to note is that the photos also show the purported RTX 4090 being clocked at just over 3GHz, no less. As mentioned, the TDP is 450W, and the leaker asserts that the graphics card is a chunky piece of hardware, as you might expect, with a “very large” heatsink. In fact, the leaker doubts whether it might be a suitable fit for a mid-tower PC case.

Asus ROG Phone 6 Batman Edition’s render surfaces

Image: 91Mobiles

Asus unveiled the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro in July, and it could soon announce the vanilla model’s Batman Edition that has leaked online.

The Asus ROG Phone 6 Batman Edition comes in black color. It has “Batman” written under the ROG branding and “ROG Phone 6 BATMAN Edition” below it.

The source claims that the Asus ROG Phone 6 Batman Edition will come with Batman-inspired themes and skins, but you can expect it to share the specs with the regular model.

We don’t know when Asus will make the ROG Phone 6 Batman Edition official, but that’s not the only new smartphone we are expecting from the Taiwanese brand since the company will unveil the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate (and likely 6D) on September 19.

Motorola’s 200MP camera phone gets a global launch

Image: Motorola

In a bold move following the iPhone 14 launch, Motorola has decided to go through with a launch of its own. The company has just unveiled the global variant of the first smartphone with a 200MP camera sensor, the new Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.

The phone is pretty identical to the X30 Pro that launched in August. It features a 6.7-inch FHD+ curved AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and 1250 nits of brightness. The hole-punch selfie camera sports a whopping 60MP resolution, although that’s obviously nothing compared to the primary rear sensor.

India to control which lending apps are permitted to app stores in latest crackdown

Image: Anindito Mukherjee / Bloomberg / Getty Images

India plans to mandate which loan apps are allowed on app stores in the country, the latest in a series of recent steps from the world’s second largest internet market to crack down on sketchy and unethical lenders.

The Reserve Bank of India, the country’s central bank, will prepare a “whitelist” of all legal apps and the nation’s IT ministry will ensure that only whitelisted apps are hosted on app stores, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

The central bank will also monitor “mule” or “rented” accounts for money laundering practices and review and cancel licenses of non banking financial institutions if they are found guilty, the Finance Ministry said Friday.

Payment aggregators in the country will be required to register themselves within a specific time frame, and India’s Ministry of Corporate Affairs will work to identify shell companies and revoke their registrations to prevent misuse.

Indian authorities in recent quarters have been clamping down on lending apps that levy exorbitant fees and use unethical means to collect the payments back. India’s central bank said earlier this month that it was moving ahead with new guidelines for digital lending that will mandate firms to provide more disclosure and transparency to benefit consumers as well as restrict several business practices.

Scores of lending apps have mushroomed in India in recent quarters, many offering loans to customers without any credit score and with poor savings, and later using unethical means to collect their money back. Law enforcement agencies in the country have made hundreds of arrests on complaints alleging abuse and harassment from agents collecting repayments on behalf of loan apps.

Due to the psychological pressure built by the predators behind these platforms, some individuals have also committed suicide, according to local media reports. Though the latest move aims to limit the availability of loan apps through app stores — a bold step, certainly — several such apps are in circulation from outside of the app stores. These links are provided to customers through text messages and even via ads.
