Samsung Galaxy S21 FE shown off in photos

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE has leaked a lot, but until now we’d only seen renders of the phone. Now though, we might have seen photos – or at least photos of parts of it.

Leaker Roland Quandt shared images on Twitter that appear to be photos of the back cover of the Galaxy S21 FE, and of parts of the inside.

While the inside doesn’t reveal much, the outer shell does, showing off a triple-lens camera in a similar camera block to the rest of the Samsung Galaxy S21 range. The images also show the phone in black, white, purple, and olive-green shades, which as Android Police points out is the same selection of shades as you’ll find the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 in.

Apple cuts down iPad production to feed iPhone 13 demand

Image: Techradar

Since the iPhone 13 went on the shelves, Apple has witnessed robust growth in sales volumes that took them into second spot in the global smartphone makers list. Now, the company is diverting components meant for the new iPad range to guard against a supply crunch of its flagship device.

Media reports indicate that Apple has reduced iPad production by up to 50 per cent so that more components are available for assembling the iPhone 13 series in order to ensure that global shipments do not decelerate.

As per the figures shared by IDC (International Data Corporation), Apple regained the second spot by shipping 50.4 million units in the third quarter that runs from July until the end of September. A report published in Nikkei Asia says the company had reduced iPad production by 50 per cent from its original plans for the past two months with processors meant for older iPhones too getting diverted to iPhone 13.

Samsung announces jeans with a dedicated Galaxy Z Flip3 pocket

Image: Samsung

Samsung in partnership with Dr Denim has just launched a pair of jeans with a dedicated Galaxy Z Flip3 pocket. It is placed on the right hip and is designed to fit the latest clamshell foldable. The jeans have all other pockets either sewn shut or entirely removed, though.

In a press release, Samsung asks “who needs big pockets” and decided to scrap them because “they take up too much space”, “don’t look stylish” and “the latest phones slip and slide inside them”. We are not quite sure we agree with those entirely, having a dedicated pocket for a foldable phone such as the Galaxy Z Flip3 does make some sense.

The pair is sold for AUD1,499 and comes with a free 128GB Galaxy Z Flip3 in one of the original four colors – Cream, Black, Green, Lavender.

A quick check at Samsung’s website reveals that’s the actual price of the foldable, meaning a purchase through Dr Denim gets you a free pair of the bespoke jeans.

Beats Fit Pro unveiled: $200 TWS buds with ANC and Spatial Audio

Image: Beats

The new Beats buds are True Wireless Headset with secure-fit wingtips, which promise to keep the buds in place even during workouts. Speaking of, the buds are water and sweat resistant (IPX4).

The Beats Fit Pro feature Spatial Audio with head tracking for music, movies and games. These are powered by the same Apple H1 chip as the AirPods, by the way, and support some of the same features, including Audio Sharing, which allows two headsets to connect to the same phone (you can even mix Beats and AirPods).

The buds alone can last 6 hours of playback with ANC or Transparency modes enabled, 7 hours if you disable those. The carrying case can recharge the buds up to three times and supports Fast Fuel – 5 minutes of charging is enough for 1 hour of playback. Charging is done over USB-C (no MagSafe here). For comparison, the AirPods 3 last 6 hours (this is without ANC, of course), but the case can recharge them four times.

Xiaomi Black Shark 4S Pro is AnTuTu champion for October

Xiaomi Black Shark 4S Pro is the new leader on AnTuTu
Image: Revu.com

AnTuTu has revealed its monthly results for the most powerful Android smartphones, and the Xiaomi Black Shark 4S Pro is the new leader. The gaming handset took the crown from its predecessor Black Shark 4 Pro thanks to the new Snapdragon 888+ chipset. Second and third place also went to phones with the latest flagship SoC by Qualcomm – the nubia Red Magic 6S Pro and the vivo iQOO 8 Pro.

The AnTuTu score is a sum of the phone performance in four key areas – GPU, CPU, user interface and memory. For the sake of this Top 10, the platform only includes phones with at least 1,000 runs on the benchmark and calculates the average of their results instead of using the highest one.

TikTok arrives on Amazon Fire TV devices in the U.S. and Canada

Image: Android Central

The app is available via the Appstore on the best Amazon Fire TV sticks as well as the company’s new in-house-built Fire TV sets, as noted by Daniel Rausch, vice president of Amazon Entertainment Devices and Services.

TikTok is a household staple in our home and I’m thrilled the whole family can now enjoy their favorite TikTok videos together on the best screen in the house with TikTok on Fire TV.

We love to pull up TikTok hands-free on our Fire TV Omni Series by just asking, ‘Alexa, play TikTok.’ We can’t wait to hear how our customers are enjoying the latest dance craze or viral trends with their families.

The release follows Amazon’s initial TikTok rollout on Fire TV devices in France, Germany, and the UK back in July, bringing Amazon up to speed with other TV platforms that already offer the app on their devices like Chromecast with Google TV.

The iPhone could soon pick up a car crash detection feature that can dial 911

Image: Digital Trends

Apple is reportedly adding an automatic car crash detection feature to the iPhone and Apple Watch, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The feature will debut early next year, likely with iOS 16.

The report claims that Apple will work on using the sensors present in both the iPhone and Apple Watch to detect “a sudden spike in gravity,” the same way Apple’s Watch works at the moment for fall detection. There are no details on how it would be implemented, but likely a notification will pop up, and if the user does not respond to a notification in a timely manner, then the phone will automatically dial 911 or other emergency services. This is how the Apple Watch’s fall detection feature functions.

Leaked Lenovo ThinkBook Plus reveals dual screen with stylus support

Image: Lenovo

A rather unusual-looking Lenovo laptop was leaked over the weekend. Coming to us via reliable and prolific gadget leaker Evan Blass on Twitter, the laptop is reportedly part of the ThinkBook range and will sport a 17-inch screen… along with a smaller display where a number pad would normally be on a keyboard.

A stylus strategically placed on the smaller screen implies it will likely be a touchscreen, allowing users to write, draw or doodle as necessary. Whether the main display also comes with stylus support is as yet unclear.

Starlink, part of Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, has registered its business in India and is preparing to apply for licenses from the local government, according to a top official.

“Pleased to share that SpaceX now has a 100% owned subsidiary in India,” Sanjay Bhargava, India director for Starlink, said in a LinkedIn post Monday. Starlink’s local India unit is registered with the name Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited.

A local unit is required for an internet company to offer its services in India, where Starlink — assuming that it gets the license — plans to offer 200,000 active terminals in over 160,000 districts by December 2022, the company representatives said. That’s an ambitious goal for the company, which as of August had shipped 100,000 user terminals in 14 countries.

Qualcomm to cut greenhouse gas emissions over the next 20 years, aims for net zero by 2040

Qualcomm’s goal, detailed in a press release today, started last year and focuses on cutting three scopes of greenhouse gas emissions: 1) emissions from the company itself, 2) indirect emissions from electricity, heating/cooling, etc, and finally, 3) emissions from its supply chain.

Over the next 20 years, Qualcomm hopes to cut emissions down to net zero, with more immediate effects of at least 50% cuts by 2030 from the base year of 2020. This first goal would focus on scopes 1 and 2 primarily, with scope 3 only seeing a 25% cut in the same time period. This effort starts with Qualcomm purchasing 100% renewable energy for its headquarters in San Diego.

Qualcomm is already working towards achieving these long-term goals by purchasing 100% renewable energy for its San Diego headquarters. The Company’s strategy includes transitioning to renewable energy via long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), decarbonizing its operations and using a minimal amount of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and carbon offsets for residual emissions.
