Motorola Edge 30 Pro rumored to launch in India and internationally in February

Motorola Edge 30 Pro rumored to launch in India and internationally in February
Image: Motorola

Back in early December Motorola took the wraps off the Edge X30 flagship for the Chinese market, launching it as the first phone to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. In the meantime, it has been rumored to make the jump to global markets (including India) under a different name: Motorola Edge 30 Pro.

Now a new rumor from a usually reliable tipster claims the device will be announced for India and other international markets at some point in February. Interestingly – or rather, weirdly – enough, it could have a different name in India. So it would go as Edge X30 in China, Edge 30 Pro in most global markets, and something else in India. That’s… an interesting strategy for sure.

Oppo’s foray into foldables could continue with its own take on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip

Image: Oppo

Oppo launched its first-ever foldable smartphone, the Oppo Find N, last month — albeit in China only. It delivered stellar hardware, a flat display, and a much better landscape orientation than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold3. Now, the company looks set for another foray into the foldable market, as rumors point to an incoming clamshell handset, complete with a launch timeline and pricing information.

91Mobiles reports that tipster Mukul Sharma has revealed Oppo’s plan for its next folding smartphone. According to him, the OEM will launch a clamshell foldable, focusing on making the technology more affordable and accessible. The device is expected to hit the market sometime in the third quarter of this year, and when it arrives, it might cost less than the already reasonably priced Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3. The report doesn’t mention any potential names for the phone, but it should likely fall under the Oppo Find line, just like the Find N and other flagships. According to the leak, Oppo could also be working on another foldable besides this flip phone — and they suspect it might be the Find N’s successor.

According to Bloomberg, the larger iMac was “paused” so that Apple could get the 24-inch iMac out. No ship date for the larger iMac has been set, with the latest rumor from dylandkt on Twitter claiming a spring 2022 launch with a possibility of a September ship date due to production concerns. However, Ross Young says panel shipments might not arrive until summer, which would push pack the release to “August or September.”

AMD RX 6900 XT GPU smashes world records with huge 3.3GHz overclock

Image: AMD

AMD’s Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card has been pushed to 3.3GHz with a monster overclock that has set multiple new records for 3DMark Fire Strike.

The card in question was a Navi 21 XTXH GPU (the pre-binned model built on chips able to reach faster clock speeds), and the overclock was achieved by Team OGS from Greece (specifically, Stavros Savvopoulos).

Team OGS used liquid nitrogen cooling to hit 3.3GHz, and paired the 6900 XT with an Intel Core i9-12900K clocked up to an equally huge 6.9GHz, as Wccftech reports.

The rig took records for Fire Strike, Fire Strike Extreme, and Fire Strike Ultra, with an overall score of 63,361, 40,304 and 19,304 respectively (and for graphics, 80,281, 42,891 and 19,108 respectively).

Interestingly, this beats another freshly-set Fire Strike record from South Korean overclocker, biso biso, who managed 62,389 for the overall score, again with the RX 6900 XT (XTXH) GPU, and briefly held the top spot. Previous to that, the record was held by Kingpin who went a very different route, using four GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPUs in SLI (meaning they’re linked together).

Your work Gmail client is set for a major makeover within the next few weeks as Google begins to roll out its new view of the future of working.

The company has announced that its new approach to email will be available for users to experience from the end of February 2022, ahead of a wider release by April 2022.

The approach looks to provide users with a one-stop shop for all their communication needs – whether via email, video conferencing, or just good old-fashioned instant messaging – without them having to open up extra tabs or windows.

Google Messages rolls out support for iMessage reactions in latest beta

In November 2021, Google was apparently preparing to add support for iMessage reactions on the Messages app, which was then rolled out to a small group of users. The search giant has now expanded the functionality to more users with the latest beta update for Messages (via Droid-Life).

Google has rolled out support for iMessage reactions on Messages. The latest update replaces a reaction description such as “liked an image” with a like button. This means Messages now converts iMessage reactions to its own set of reactions on Android phones, albeit in beta.

Previously, Android users would only see a text description when iPhone users reacted to their message. That was due to the lack of cross-compatibility between iMessage and Messages.

There are minor variations in how Messages interprets those reactions, though. For example, iMessage’s heart reaction appears as “smiling face With heart-shaped eyes” in Messages. Nonetheless, it hides those annoying text descriptions that would otherwise clutter your messages.

Swedish hypercar maker Koenigsegg has long been a home for novel engineering, and that’s evident in its new electric motor. Developed for the Gemera four-seater, this electric motor, dubbed the Quark, is a tiny powerhouse. In a package that weighs just 63 pounds, the Quark develops 335 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. For scale, that’s a 330-mL energy drink in the pictures seen throughout.

India will implement a battery swapping policy to boost EV sales

India plans battery swapping as a solution for rapid EV charging
Image: Sun Mobility

India is introducing a battery swapping policy as part of a push to boost EV sales, Reuters has reported. “Considering the constraint of space in urban areas for setting up charging stations at scale, a battery swapping policy will be brought out,” said India’s Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman.

The idea is change out depleted batteries for freshly charged ones, potentially saving time compared to charging. You may have first heard about the idea when Tesla launched battery swapping stations in 2014, then quietly dropped the idea due to lack of use.

India plans to reduce “interoperability standards,” presumably so that battery-swapping tech can be used between different EV makes and models. “The private sector will be encouraged to create sustainable and innovative business models for battery and energy as a service, improving the efficiency of the EV ecosystem,” said Sitharaman.

India becomes global anomaly by taxing crypto earnings — even if you’ve made losses

India finally gave cryptocurrency and digital assets some recognition, although its proposal for a 30% tax on income from all virtual assets will upset many. This levy includes cryptocurrency exchanges, as well as NFT (Non-Fungible Token) trades.

This move comes after a lot of uncertainty around the legality of cryptocurrency trades and exchanges created by rumors of a blanket ban last year. However, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government will present a new draft of the crypto bill soon, with an aim to regulate digital currency transactions.
