AMD’s next-gen processors might have a major disadvantage against rival Intel

Image: Future

AMD’s next-gen Zen 4 processors are expected later this year along with whole new motherboards, but the possible loss of DDR4 support might make the new upgrade a very expensive proposition for a lot of users hoping to upgrade to the platform.

With AMD’s new Zen 4-based “Raphael” 7000-series processors expected to be released later this year, the company is looking to move on from its aging AM4 socket, which it has used for the past few Ryzen series releases, and it looks like DDR4 support will be dropped along with the older socket.

The news comes from our friends over at Tom’s Hardware, who spoke to several sources in the supply chain who say that DDR5 will be the only memory supported on X670 and B650 AM5 motherboards expected to launch alongside the Raphael processors later this year.

Nothing has been officially announced yet, and it’s always possible that AMD will find a way to keep DDR4 support on another motherboard series besides X670 and B650, but that isn’t clear at this point. We’ve reached out to AMD for comment and will update this story if and when we hear back from the company.

iQOO Neo6 SE specs leak

iQOO Neo6
Image: iQOO

vivo sub-brand iQOO has recently unveiled the Neo6, but like last year the Neo family will have multiple members, according to the latest rumor from China. The first one to become official, at some point soon, will be the iQOO Neo6 SE.

This model is allegedly going to sport a 6.62-inch FHD+ 120Hz OLED flat touchscreen with a centered single hole-punch for the selfie camera, and it will be powered by the aging Snapdragon 870 high-end SoC.

The phone is said to come with a 4,700 mAh battery which will have support for 80W fast charging. Thus, the display, battery capacity and charging speed will all match the Neo6. The main difference seems to be in the chipset used, as the Neo6 goes with the most recent top dog from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

On the other hand, camera specs for the Neo6 SE are yet to leak, so there may be some cuts there as well in order to hit what will undoubtedly be an even more affordable price point with this one.

Mysterious OnePlus phone leaks on certification website. Do you dig it?

OnePlus phone TEANAA
Image: Tenna

OnePlus seems to be on a roll launching new phones every few weeks. The company recently revealed the OnePlus Ace in China and is getting ready to showcase the 10R in India later this week. Now, it seems another new OnePlus is almost out the door as it has popped up on a certification website.

Strutting a camera bump that looks somewhat like that of the Oppo X5 Pro while also resembling the one on the OnePlus 10 Pro, the mysterious phone doesn’t have a name right now. TENAA’s website (h/t MySmartPrice) refers to it with a model number PGZ110. That said, the certification platform has revealed most of the phone’s key specs.

The device is listed with a 6.59-inch LCD display and a 2,412 x 1,080 resolution. There’s no word on the refresh rate.

Running the ship will be an unnamed octa-core processor clocked at 2.8GHz. This will be paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. Battery capacity is mentioned at 4,890mAh.

For imaging, the phone is said to feature a 64MP main camera, an 8MP secondary shooter, and a 2MP snapper. There’s a 16MP camera upfront.

It looks like the phone will feature a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The alert slider seems to be missing.

Specs of the vanilla OnePlus 10 leaked recently, and they don’t match the information here. The mystery phone may belong to the Nord series. The China-only OnePlus Ace came with the model number PGKM10, which closely matches the leaked phone’s model number. So it may be another Ace series phone that comes to the global markets with a different name.

Your Fitbit tracker is probably about to get AFib detection

Image: Fitbit

Your Fitbit may soon receive a new feature to help detect atrial fibrillation. Last month, Google revealed this new feature for identifying atrial fibrillation through its Fitbit wearable products (via Android Central). Soon after, it received the go-ahead from the FDA to roll out the feature. Now, Google has confirmed the feature is rolling out to select products from April 25.

The new AFib detection is an algorithm intended to monitor your heart rate rhythm when you are asleep or staying still. If the algorithm detects anything it believes could be connected with AFib, it’ll notify you through Fitbit’s Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications feature.

AFib is a complex condition to detect, and Fitbit cites research that confirms around 33 million people around the globe suffer from the condition. AFib can significantly increase your chance of a stroke. If you receive a notification through this feature, you should discuss the information with your doctor or another healthcare professional.

Fitbit’s new algorithm works similarly to an ECG monitor that you’d find on wearables such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, but it doesn’t need the same hardware. That means Fitbit products that don’t have ECG monitors can include this feature. Both the Fitbit Charge 5 and Sense already include ECG monitors, but they’re also getting this update to help better detect the condition.

The iPhone 14 Pro is likely getting a new shape and a throwback color

iPhone 14 Pro leak corners
Image: AppleTrack

Along with a new screen, camera, and price tag, the iPhone 14 Pro could be getting one more change this fall: a new shape. The latest schematics show a refreshed design with rounder corners.

According to AppleTrack, Apple will be tweaking the corners of the iPhone 14 Pro to match the shape of the new camera array, Granted, it’s not a huge change, but after years of iPhones that all had the same body design, it’s interesting that Apple is changing the look of the Pro this year. In previous iPhones, the camera array was always slightly off on the Pro models, so the shape change appears to be related to the larger camera bump. Apple will match the corners to the shape of the camera array, so they will need to be slightly rounder.

We also might know the new color this year—and it’s something of a throwback. According to a now-deleted Weibo post, Apple will once again sell a purple version of the iPhone 14. Apple previously introduced a purple iPhone 12 and 12 mini at the Spring Loaded event in 2021 and also sold a purple iPhone 11. But it’s never had a purple Pro iPhone, which has had various blue and green hues in addition to the standard graphite, gold, and silver options.

Samsung ad highlights Google Assistant support on the Galaxy Watch 4 ahead of the official rollout

Last week, Samsung rolled out a new software update for the Verizon variants of the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic. An initial version of the changelog for the update shared by Verizon referenced Google Assistant support, and it even included screenshots showcasing how users would be able to enable the “Hey, Google” hotword and other settings. This led us to believe that Samsung was finally rolling out Assistant support to the smartwatches, but Verizon later removed all mentions of Google Assistant from the changelog, and Google said that Assistant support was “not rolling out to Galaxy Watch 4, and we don’t have an update on timing.

Now Samsung has published a new ad for the Galaxy Watch 4 through its Spain-based YouTube channel (via Reddit), and it showcases a person using Google Assistant voice commands on the Galaxy Watch 4. This has, once again, sparked rumors that Google Assistant support for the Galaxy Watch 4 could roll out soon.

Meta is opening a retail location for you to try out all that nightmarish Facebook hardware

Image: Meta

When we talk about Facebook our thoughts immediately go to the social network itself, but Meta’s interests extend far beyond just software, and we’ve been seeing a lot lately from its hardware projects. Not only do we have Oculus Quest headsets (now called Meta Quest, for reasons), but now that’s joined by things like the Portal smart speakers and even spy glasses in the form of the Ray-Ban Stories. If you ever wanted a place where you could check out all that not-at-all-creepy, totally-respectful-of-your-privacy tech, you luckily now have one, as the very first retail Meta store comes to Burlingame, California.

This initial retail effort, which will supposedly help define a broader sales strategy, opens early next month. The whole point of this retail location is to let you try out Meta’s tech for yourself before you actually buy it, and for some of it, that hands-on time sounds like it could be genuinely useful. For example, if you haven’t tried out VR tech before, and you want to give it a spin before deciding if you actually want to play VR games at home, there’s a Quest 2 demo to show off titles Beat Saber and Real VR Fishing. And if you were thinking about getting Ray-Ban Stories, you can try them on at the store and see which style works best for you.

Elon Musk’s Next Twitter Challenge: Figuring Out How to Moderate Speech

Twitter: Why Elon Musk has been so keen on taking control - BBC News
Image: BBC

Elon Musk has acknowledged he doesn’t have the answers to all of Twitter’s problems. Among its biggest: how to moderate divisive content shared on the service.

For years, Twitter and other social networks have struggled to police offensive content such as hate speech, harassment and misinformation that can lead to real-world harm. Progressives and civil rights activists say the platforms aren’t doing enough to crack down on offensive posts. Conservatives say Twitter censors their speech, an allegation the company denies.

No one seems happy with how Twitter decides what gets taken down and what is left up.

Now Musk, the world’s richest person, has thrust himself into the middle of the debate. On Monday, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO struck a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, which he plans to take private. He’s indicated he wants looser content moderation for the platform, a change that would have outsized influence on politics and society.
