Apple is no longer the world’s biggest wearables brand

Image: Future

Hot on the heels of trumping Apple’s smartphone sales, Xiaomi has now become the number one seller of wearables worldwide, bar none.

According to data from market analysts Canalys, Xiaomi has pushed Apple into second place during Q2 of this year, both in terms of units shipped and market share.

This was a pretty close-run thing. Xiaomi shipped around eight million wearables to Apple’s 7.9 million, and their market shares were 19.6% and 19.3%. But we imagine that champagne corks are still popping at the Beijing-based firm, as beating Apple at anything, at all, is a very big deal.

Google Is Turning Gmail Into Microsoft Outlook

Google announced a bunch of new stuff coming to Gmail, including a heavier integration with Google Meet. Specifically, Google wants to add more spontaneous interactions with colleagues by allowing one-on-one calls within the Gmail app using Google Meet. Now, when you call a user in this way, it’ll ring their Gmail mobile app and notify them in Gmail on their web browser.

With this change, you can’t really avoid Google Meet anymore. Even if you don’t have it installed, people can now call you through Gmail.

When you add in the existence of Google Meet and Hangouts in Gmail, the email service is slowly becoming more and more like Outlook in that it’s not just an email client. Before long, you might be able to use Gmail for all Workspace features, especially if you use Gmail for work.

Xiaomi could be working on a flagship Android phone with a 200MP camera

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra review

Xiaomi’s Galaxy S22 challenger will come equipped with a 200MP camera, according to Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station. In addition to the 200MP sensor, the phone will apparently have a 50MP “main” sensor as well.

Although the tipster hasn’t revealed more details, there’s a good chance that the phone will be the first to feature Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL HP1 sensor. Announced last week, the ISOCELL HP1 sensor is Samsung’s first mobile image sensor to have ChameleonCell technology for improved low-light performance.

While the new 200MP sensor offers significantly higher resolution than the 50MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor used in the Mi 11 Ultra, its pixel size of 0.64μm isn’t very impressive. The relatively small pixel size of the ISOCELL HP1 could be the reason why the phone is tipped to feature two “main” sensors.

Apple will likely be channeling some of that hit-making magic for its next iPhone, too, when it holds its “California streaming” event Sept. 14.

The event, which will be held virtually amid the coronavirus pandemic, is expected to include announcements for a new Apple Watch Series 7 with a revamped design, alongside the iPhone 13 (or potentially called the iPhone 12S). Apple hasn’t discussed its plans for the devices, aside from a mention of four new iPhones in FCC filings Monday.

Lenovo unveils Tab P11 and P12 Pro 5G tablets

Lenovo unveils its first 5G tablets, P11 5G and Tab P12 Pro, the latter with SD870 and 120 Hz AMOLED display
Image: Lenovo

The Lenovo Tab P12 Pro packs a lot more punch than the Tab P11 Pro as it features a Snapdragon 870 chipset (a massive upgrade over the 730 of its predecessor). It is paired with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB storage (double the base memory of the P11 Pro), so it can do some serious work.

Lenovo Tab P11 5G will give you the next-gen connectivity at a price of €500 without VAT. Alas, this one isn’t coming to North America either, but will be available in the EMEA region from October.

This is a slightly smaller tablet with an 11” IPS LCD with 2,000 x 1,200 px resolution and 60Hz refresh rate, making it similar to the vanilla P11. Dolby Vision is still supported (though HDR10+ is not) and the peak brightness is 400 nits.

However, this one is powered by a Snapdragon 750G chipset (replacing the 662), which will offer higher performance plus 5G connectivity (on the sub-6 GHz bands). The chipset is paired with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB storage (for comparison, the vanilla model started at 4/64 GB).

WhatsApp will soon let you transfer your chat history from Android to iPhones

After rolling out the ability to migrate your chats from iPhones to selected Samsung devices, WhatsApp is now working on letting you move your chat history from Android to iPhone. The first signs of this feature have been discovered in the latest build of WhatsApp beta for Android.

The details on how this feature will work are light at the moment, but WABetaInfo claims the process will require one to connect their Android device and iPhone via a USB-C to Lightning cable. Additionally, the Move to iOS app will also be required during the migration process. More details about this feature should be available in future WhatsApp beta builds.

Apple’s automotive ambitions dealt blow as car chief joins Ford

Image: cnet

Apple has lost the executive in charge of its below-the-radar car project to Ford, dealing a further blow to the iPhone maker’s automotive ambitions.

Doug Field, Apple’s vice-president of special projects, had also worked on Tesla’s Model 3 vehicle under Elon Musk. Field, who rejoined Apple in 2018 after a previous stint at the business, is the fourth senior member of the company’s car team to leave since February.

He will become Ford’s chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer with immediate effect, a critical post as the auto industry moves to adopt vehicles powered by electricity and guided by computers. This year Ford signed a six-year deal with Google that includes using Android software in the Michigan carmaker’s vehicles.
