The Redmi 9 Activ is now official, but it’s probably not what you think

Redmi 9 Activ official
Image: Xiaomi

We heard murmurings of a Redmi 9 Activ earlier this month, suggesting that the Xiaomi sub-brand was working on another model in its Redmi 9 series. Now, Redmi has made it official by launching the phone in India today.

Those expecting a more durable version of the Redmi 9 will be disappointed though, as this isn’t like Samsung launching Active phones that are more durable than their typical devices. Instead, the top-end Redmi 9 Activ simply seems to have more RAM (6GB versus the Indian Redmi 9 offering 4GB across the board). Otherwise, the base Redmi 9 Active still has 4GB of RAM.

The rest of the phone is identical to the Indian Redmi 9 as well. So that means a lightweight Helio G35 chipset, a 6.53-inch HD+ LCD screen, a 5,000mAh battery with 10W charging, and a micro-USB port instead of USB-C connectivity. The Redmi 9 Activ also packs a 13MP+2MP rear camera pairing and a 5MP shooter in a waterdrop notch.

Oppo K9 Pro specs officially confirmed ahead of September 26 launch

A couple of days ago, Oppo announced it will introduce the K9 Pro on September 26 while giving us a glimpse of its design and confirming the 64MP primary camera and MediaTek chipset. The company has now revealed the SoC is the Dimensity 1200 SoC.

Oppo also revealed that the K9 Pro will sport a 120Hz AMOLED screen with 100% DCI-P3 coverage and HDR10 certification, but it doesn’t tell us the panel’s diagonal or resolution. However, thanks to TENAA, we know this is a 6.43″ FullHD+ display.

The K9 Pro will pack a 4,500 mAh battery with 60W charging and feature a cooling system with a heat dissipation area of 14,000mm2. The smartphone will have an NFC chip on board and support Wi-Fi 6 and 5G connectivity. It will be 8.5mm thick and weigh 180 grams.

Moto G Pure leak lists 6.5″ AMOLED display, 48 MP main camera and aluminum frame

The Moto G Pure is said to use the Helio G25 chipset, earlier prototypes apparently used a P22 instead. The G25 is a 12 nm chip with eight Cortex-A53 CPU cores and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU, it is meant for $100 phones or so. The base configuration will have 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB storage, Android 11 will be pre-installed.

Hearing about the 48 MP main camera piqued our interest, but it will be paired only with a 2 MP depth sensor and a 5 MP selfie camera. Nothing to write home about. The same goes for the 4,000 mAh battery with 10W charging.

At least it is over USB-C and there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Even so, either the $300-$350 pricing is way off or Motorola needs some quiet time. We’ll know more in the second week of October when the Moto G Pure should be unveiled.

Google sued over allegedly infringing on patents from defunct wearable company Jawbone

Image: 9to5Google

Jawbone, which went out of business in 2017, has just risen from the dead, but not for anything good. A mysterious party is now using Jawbone patents to launch lawsuits against Google and Apple.

Bloomberg reports that “Jawbone Innovations LLC” has filed a lawsuit against Google. The broad lawsuit covers “all versions and variants of Google smartphones […] tablets and/or notebooks […], earbuds […] smart home devices […] and other Android Devices.” Apple was hit with a similar suit as our colleagues at 9to5Mac covered, and the same LLC previously targeted Samsung with a similar suit earlier this year.

In the suit, a preliminary injunction has been demanded to stop both Google and Apple from selling the products that infringe on Jawbone patents. The patents in question revolve around limiting background noise, a tech that was developed early on by Jawbone under US military contracts.

Google, in response to the allegations, said: “We dispute the claims, and will defend ourselves vigorously.”

China Bans Crypto Mining: Chinese Crypto Traders at Loss

On Friday, September 24, 2021, China’s most powerful regulators went a step further by issuing a blanket ban on all cryptocurrency transactions and crypto mining, hurting bitcoin and other big coins, squeezing the whole cryptocurrency and blockchain ecosystem, influencing the value of major cryptocurrencies.

Ten government organizations, including the People’s Bank of China and the central bank, together with banking, securities and foreign exchange regulators, have agreed to work together to root out “illegal” cryptocurrency activities for the first time.

According to George Zarya, CEO of Bequant crypto exchange in London, China often takes drastic measures with claims of threats or countermeasures but then goes completely radio silent for some time. He openly stated that China would not assist cryptocurrency market development in any way, shape, or form since doing so would go against their current objectives of limiting capital outflow and big tech.
