Kuo: Apple relying on Sunny Optical for most iPhone 14 main camera lenses

Image: 9to5Mac

In his latest analysis, Ming-Chi Kuo says Chinese Sunny Optical will be the largest supplier of wide-camera 7P lenses for the iPhone 14 series, exceeding the market consensus that Largan and Genius would have been the most important suppliers for this generation.

Sunny Optical is still pretty much a new supplier for the Cupertino company, as it started being part of the iPhone supply chain last year. Now, the firm is responsible for most of the wide-camera 7P lenses for the iPhone 14 series. Kuo explains:

The shipment allocation of Sunny Optical’s high-end wide 7P lens (used in two high-end iPhone 14 Pro) and lower-end wide 7P lens (used in two lower-end iPhone 14) was 50–60% and 55- 65%, respectively. The proportion of the supply of Largan and Genius is about the same.

The analyst says Sunny Optical has increased “significantly” its capacity so it’ll continue the price war to obtain more orders and raise utilization. In addition, for the iPhone 15 series, Sunny Optical may become the main supplier of the ToF lens in 2023.

Differences between iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models will include pixel quality

Image: 9to5Mac

The expected differences between iPhone 14 base and Pro models keep growing. A new report today says that not only will ProMotion displays be limited to the Pro models, but even the pixels themselves will reportedly be higher-quality in the top-tier models.

Display supplier Samsung is reported to be using their highest grade of OLED materials for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, while the two base models will use lower-grade materials …

Differences between iPhone 14 base and Pro models

We’re expecting a number of differences between this year’s base and Pro iPhone models.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is said to have a new design, improved cameras, and even a better processor. This phone will also feature a high-end finish in stainless steel and glass, a telephoto lens, LiDAR scanner, and ProMotion technology.

Lacking all of these “premium” features, the iPhone 14 Plus/Max will be less than $1,000, being the perfect option for those who want a bigger iPhone but without the need for paying the “Pro” price that starts from $1,099.

But a new supply chain report suggests that’s not all.

New leak may have given us Pixel 7 launch, release dates

Image: Google

Google surprised us back in May when it confirmed the existence of the Pixel 7 series phones and gave us a peek at their designs. The company only confirmed a fall 2022 launch window at the time, now a YouTuber and frequent leaker may have given us the exact dates.

Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech said the Pixel 7 series will go on pre-order on October 6 and will be available from October 13, citing “very reputable sources.” Prosser also suggests that the October 6 pre-order date will be the date of the launch event.

The YouTuber has a pretty solid record regarding device launches in recent years, accurately predicting an October 19 launch for the Pixel 6 series as well as the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 launch date. But he has had a couple of misses too, such as erroneously claiming the Pixel 5a was canceled. Nevertheless, an October launch certainly sounds about right for Google.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series could see Snapdragon chips in more regions

Image: XDA

Samsung has historically used both Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and the in-house Exynos chips in its flagship phones over the years. That’s also true for the company’s Galaxy S22 series which is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip in markets like the US, while many of the units destined for other markets like Europe got Exynos 2200. India got a Snapdragon chip in the Samsung Galaxy S22 series for the first time, and it looks like future Galaxy S series flagships will carry a Snapdragon chip in more regions as the company is strengthening its partnership with Qualcomm. The collaboration between companies involves widening the usage of “Snapdragon platforms for future premium Samsung Galaxy products, including smartphones, PCs, tablets, extended reality, and more.”

Qualcomm’s press release for the media doesn’t explicitly mention the Galaxy S23 flagship or the regions in which it’ll carry the Snapdragon chip, but the company’s CEO Cristiano Amon made it quite clear during the earnings call that more regions will see Snapdragon-powered Galaxy flagship products — specifically S23 and beyond — as a result of this multiyear agreement.

Ambani’s Reliance Jio top buyer in India’s $19 billion 5G airwaves sale

Image: Getty Images

Telecom operators in India agreed to spend $19 billion in the government auction for the 5G airwaves, New Delhi said Monday, the highest from them in any spectrum sale, as the world’s second-largest wireless market readies the rollout of improved and faster voice and data speeds.

Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea competed with one another for seven days and made majority of the acquisitions to purchase 71% of all offered spectrum, which the government said exceeded its expectations.

Tycoon Mukesh Ambani’s Jio, which counts Google and Meta among its backers, was the most aggressive participant with spendings of $11.13 billion, Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Monday in a press briefing. Google-backed Airtel made spendings of worth $5.44 billion, whereas Vodafone Idea, the Indian unit of British giant Vodafone Group and billionaire Kumar Mangalam’s Idea Cellular, made spendings of worth $2.37 billion.

Even as India is the second largest wireless market, it has been slow in comparison to several markets in setting up the networks for the rollout of 5G technology, which carriers across the globe say offers significantly faster data speeds and could play an instrumental role in applications around innovations in autonomous mobility and telemedicines and robotics among other industries.

MIT engineers develop stickers that can see inside the body

Image: MIT

Ultrasound imaging is a safe and noninvasive window into the body’s workings, providing clinicians with live images of a patient’s internal organs. To capture these images, trained technicians manipulate ultrasound wands and probes to direct sound waves into the body. These waves reflect back out to produce high-resolution images of a patient’s heart, lungs, and other deep organs.

Currently, ultrasound imaging requires bulky and specialized equipment available only in hospitals and doctor’s offices. But a new design by MIT engineers might make the technology as wearable and accessible as buying Band-Aids at the pharmacy.

In a paper appearing today in Science, the engineers present the design for a new ultrasound sticker — a stamp-sized device that sticks to skin and can provide continuous ultrasound imaging of internal organs for 48 hours.
