Image: Joe Maring/Digital Trends

Samsung kicked off its much-anticipated mid-year Galaxy Unpacked event this morning, where it unveiled the next generation of foldable smartphones in its Galaxy Z Series lineup, new Galaxy Watch wearables, and more.

This year’s Galaxy Unpacked followed a similar theme to last summer’s Unpacked event, suggesting that Samsung is trending toward foldables and wearables for its mid-year focus. Multiple reports leading up to the event pointed to new Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 phones, the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and premium Galaxy Buds 2 Pro wireless headphones. Now that the dust has settled, it’s safe to say Samsung didn’t disappoint us.

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 will measure only 5.4mm thick when unfolded, Watch S1 Pro also coming tomorrow

CEO Lei Jun was unhappy with the bulk of foldable phones, so a team at Xiaomi spent nearly two years working on the problem. The fruit of their labors will be revealed tomorrow – the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2.

The CEO revealed that the new model will measure only 5.4mm thick when unfolded. The folded thickness is expected to be 11.4mm including the camera bump. Weight is another issue that bothers Xiaomi’s leader and (according to unconfirmed info), the Fold 2 will weigh just 202g, making it lighter than some non-folding phones. For comparison, the original Mi Mix Fold measured 7.6mm unfolded, 17.2mm folded and weighed a hefty 317g (and this is for the lighter glass model).

By the way, tomorrow’s launch will also include the Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro 12.4” and the Xiaomi Buds 4 Pro. And, as it turns out, there will be one more thing – a Xiaomi Watch S1 Pro, an upgrade to the Watch S1.

OPPO Watch 3 is the first smartwatch with Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon Wear platform

Image: Oppo

OPPO isn’t known for its wearables, but the Chinese manufacturer has started paying attention to this category in the last two years. The first-gen OPPO Watch was a standout offering, and it was one of the best budget Wear OS smartwatches available.

For 2022, OPPO is introducing the Watch 3 series. There are two models, the Watch 3 and the Watch 3 Pro. Both smartwatches have a premium design and are made out of aluminum, and are sold with either fluororubber or leather bands.

The standard Watch 3 has a 1.75-inch AMOLED screen with a 3D glass layer, and the rectangular design looks rather striking. It has a 400mAh battery and is touted to last up to four days with daily use — if the real-world numbers are anywhere close to that figure, it will be among the best Android smartwatches by default. The Galaxy Watch 4 doesn’t last more than two days with medium use, so this is a notable achievement.

The reason for this is likely down to the fact that both models are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 5100 platform. OPPO didn’t go into much detail over the chipset, and the naming convention doesn’t tie up with Qualcomm’s official Wear W5 Gen 1 designation for its latest wearable platform, so this could just be OPPO using the older naming.

As for the Watch 3 Pro, it has a large 1.91-inch AMOLED screen, and interestingly, it gets LTPO tech, allowing the smartwatch to dynamically change the refresh. It also has a 3D curved glass layer, and a 500mAh battery with a touted five-day battery life. Both smartwatches get fast charging — this is OPPO after all — with a 10-minute charge delivering usage of up to 24 hours, and a full charge taking 60 minutes.

AMD’s fastest Ryzen 7000 CPUs could have a fancy box, but may get pricier

Image: VideoCardz

AMD’s packaging for its fastest Ryzen 7000 processors has purportedly been leaked, and it looks very smart indeed – plus there’s some news on pricing, although that suggests these top-end models might be costlier than existing Ryzen 5000 heavyweights.

The picture of the box for next-gen Ryzen 9 CPUs was aired by VideoCardz, with the tech site observing that it is supposedly taken from an internal presentation conducted by AMD. Add your own skepticism at this point, and indeed VideoCardz notes it hasn’t been able to confirm with other sources whether the pic is genuine, so bear that in mind – though the image is a good fake if it isn’t the real thing.

Also remember that this is for the Ryzen 9 models, the most premium chips for Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4), and the boxes for lesser spec CPUs will likely look different (often some considerable effort is made with the packaging for expensive silicon, to make buyers feel they’re getting something special – just look at Intel’s mock gold wafer for the Alder Lake flagship).

Elon Musk Dumps $6.9 Billion In Tesla Stock After Pumping Up Investors At Shareholder Meeting

It appears that Elon Musk has pulled a classic pump and dump on Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) investors, just hours after holding the firm’s annual shareholder meeting last Thursday. It appears that contrary to Musk’s famous statement, his money will not be “the first in.. last out.”

At the shareholder meeting, as reported by TheStreet.com, Musk highlighted that the company was “about to embark on an experiment to seize an untapped opportunity.” Including in his hype-speech was commentary on the delayed Cybertruck, expansions to the current supercharger network, and even a novel restaurant drive-in theatre supercharging location in LA.

The next day, he embarked on divesting his stake in the company, selling $2.9 billion in shares on Friday, not even a day after hyping the company. As per Form 4 filings made this evening, the sales didn’t stop there, with a further $1.4 billion sold on Monday, and $2.6 billion sold today, on Tuesday.

All told, Musk unloaded a total of 7.9 million shares for gross proceeds of $6.89 billion in the three trading sessions following the annual shareholder meeting.

The selling has been met with a flurry of tweets from both long and short shareholders, as well as general market commentariats. A key highlight, aside from the aforementioned tweet from 2013 by Musk, is Elon’s comment in April that no further sales of his Tesla stock were planned.

India toughens digital lending rules to provide greater transparency, control to consumers

Image: INDRANIL MUKHERJEE / AFP / Getty Images

The Reserve Bank of India has published guidelines that it intends to enforce for digital lending firms, recommending more transparency and control to customers as the South Asian nation’s central bank moves to take further steps to crack down on sketchy practices and creditors.

The guidelines, released Wednesday (PDF), spell out who all can lend to borrowers in India, what all data they can glean from them, and mandates expanding the disclosure requirements in a move that can rattle many fintech startups in the world’s second largest internet market.

Lenders will not be permitted to increase a customer’s credit limit without obtaining their consent and will be required to disclose the annual loan rate in explicit terms. Digital lending apps will also be required to take prior explicit consent from customers before collecting any data and all such requests should be “need-based,” the guidelines added.

“In any case, DLAs should desist from accessing mobile phone resources such as file and media, contact list, call logs, telephony functions, etc. A one-time access can be taken for camera, microphone, location or any other facility necessary for the purpose of on-boarding/ KYC requirements only with the explicit consent of the borrower,” the guidelines added.
