Mediatek unveils 6nm Dimensity 920 and Dimensity 810 chipsets

Mediatek brings two new 6nm chipsets - Dimensity 920 and Dimensity 810
image: Mediatek

Mediatek has just announced the arrival of two new chipsets – the Dimensity 920 and Dimensity 810. They are an evolution of the Dimensity 900 and Dimensity 800, respectively, and are built on TSMC’s 6nm manufacturing process.

Both platforms bring octa-core CPUs and support for Full HD+ displays with 120Hz screen refresh rate suggesting they are intended for mid-range phones.

The Dimensity 920 has its powerful Cortex-A78 cores running at 2.5GHz with the Cortex-A55 ones clocked at 2GHz. The GPU is a Mali-G68 MC4, and Mediatek claims an optimized design for power efficiency should offer up to 9% faster gaming performance over the Dimensity 900.

The Dimensity 920 supports LPDDR4x and LPDDR5 RAM, as well as UFS 2.2 and UFS 3.1 storage, giving makers extra flexibility when it comes to building smartphones with it.

The Dimensity 920 supports Dual 5G SIM connectivity as well as VoNR service. Other specs include all the latest Wi-Fi standards, 2×2 MIMO and Bluetooth 5.2.

Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 4 is its first phone to officially launch with an invisible selfie camera

Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 4 is its first phone to officially launch with an invisible selfie camera
Image: Xiaomi

Xiaomi finally debuted its Camera Under Panel (CUP) technology with the Mi Mix 4 phone reveal last night. The company had demoed this tech last year, but the Mix 4 is the first commercial device to feature it.

So how does it work? Xiaomi has modified the circuit around the selfie camera to display “micro-diamond pixels,” which are brighter but smaller pixels than the rest of the screen. This helps the company maintain the 400 pixels per inch (ppi) pixel density throughout the screen, to ensure you won’t be able to tell there’s a camera hiding beneath the display.

To reduce light diffraction while taking selfies, the company has used a new transparent curved wiring Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) material in the circuit. All of these techniques sound similar to Oppo’s newly revealed prototype under-the-screen camera tech. But Xiaomi is the first one going to market with it.

AMD’s Radeon RX 6600 XT Launched To Compete Against NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT GPU ships Aug. 11, starting at $379 - CNET
Image: AMD

AMD officially unveiled the Radeon RX 6600 XT in late July but the cards have officially launched today, aimed at 1080p gaming. In a review at HotHardware, PowerColor is offering both a high-end Radeon RX 6600 XT Red Devil and its somewhat more mainstream “Fighter” branded counterpart, for example. Whereas AMD’s reference Radeon RX 6600 XT offers a Game clock up to 2359MHz and a Boost clock of 25895MHz, the PowerColor Red Devil peaks at 2428MHz (Game) and 2607MHz (Boost). Those higher GPU clocks result in higher compute performance and fillrate, etc., but the memory configuration and frequency are the same — so in memory bandwidth constrained situations, performance won’t be all that much different.

Performance-wise, with most game titles that use traditional rasterization, the Radeon RX 6600 XT is clearly faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 and previous-gen cards like the Radeon RX 5700 XT or GeForce RTX 2060 Super. However, when you factor ray tracing into the equation, NVIDIA has a distinct and significant advantage still. The Radeon RX 6600 XT Fighter should sell for at or close to its $379 MSRP. PowerColor says that they should be readily available for gamers to purchase today.

Norton and Avast are merging into an $8 billion antivirus empire

Avast vs. Norton

NortonLifeLock and Avast are merging in a deal worth more than $8 billion. The deal will see NortonLifelock acquire all of Avast’s shares, and create a much larger cyber security firm. “With this combination, we can strengthen our cyber safety platform and make it available to more than 500 million users,” says Vincent Pilette, NortonLifeLock CEO. “We will also have the ability to further accelerate innovation to transform cyber safety.”

The combination should lead to antivirus products that include the benefits of Avast’s focus on privacy and NortonLifeLock’s experience in identity, all at a time when cyber security is critical for both consumers and businesses.

Ransomware is on the rise, with new high profile cases occurring on what feels like a weekly basis. Gigabyte was hit by a ransomware attack earlier this week, and a large ransomware attack affected customers of Kaseya’s remote IT management software last month.

Facebook shuts accounts in anti-vaccine influencer campaign

Image: Facebook

Facebook has removed hundreds of accounts linked to a mysterious advertising agency operating from Russia that sought to pay social media influencers to smear Covid-19 vaccines made by Pfizer and AstraZeneca.

A network of 65 Facebook accounts and 243 Instagram accounts was traced back to Fazze, an advertising and marketing firm working on behalf of an unknown client.

The network used fake accounts to spread misleading claims that disparaged the safety of the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines. One claimed AstraZeneca’s shot would turn a person into a chimpanzee. The accounts targeted audiences in India, Latin America and, to a lesser extent, the US, using several social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram.

Seagate Firecuda 530 review: It’s very, very fast

seagate firecuda 530 primary

The FireCuda 530 is a 2280 (22mm wide, 80mm long), PCIe 4 x4, NVMe SSD. Seagate, like many other vendors these days, are loath to reveal the fine details of their SSDs, so we’ve taken to stripping off the labels and reading the chip numbers.  The 2TB model I tested has 2GB of SK Hynix DDR4 primary cache. It uses a Phison PS6108 controller, and it stores bits on 176-layer 3D Micron TLC (Triple-Level Cell/3-bit) NAND. Good stuff.

Instagram will now let users limit interactions from non-followers

Instagram's Limits won't completely cure online harassment, but it should help.
Image: Instagram

While Instagram can be fun for connecting with friends and scouting potential hookups, not every comment or DM slide is friendly. Now the social media platform has introduced an update aimed at curbing spikes in abusive messages, so you can get back to posting thirst traps in peace.

Announced in a blog post on Wednesday, Instagram’s new feature Limits allows users to automatically hide both DMs and comments from users who don’t follow them — or who have only just started following them within the past week. This means users can keep lines of communication open to their usual audience, but still protect themselves from temporary influxes of attackers.
