Oppo’s first foldable phone could be out next month

Image: Future

While we’ve recently seen some weird and wonderful prototype devices from Oppo that play around with what’s possible from a smartphone screen, we’re still waiting for a true foldable from the company – a wait that could soon be over.

According to a tip from a Chinese source (via GSMArena), the foldable handset is going to break cover next month, November 2021. It’s been rather quiet on the foldable phone front recently, so a brand new device would certainly be welcome.

This particular leak suggests the new device will be sporting an 8-inch, 120Hz refresh rate screen, but we don’t get many other details. We’ve actually been waiting for an Oppo foldable phone to arrive for most of this year.

The Realme GT Neo2 unveiled last month comes in three colors, with the green version attracting a lot of attention on social media. Realme also launched the Buds Air 2 TWS earphones in a green colorway and looking at the response, the young brand is set to offer more products in a green shade.

Mr. Madhav Sheth – who’s the VP of Realme, CEO of Realme India, and was recently appointed as the President of Realme International Business Group – posted an image on Twitter that includes the Realme Book (Slim) and Realme Pad’s green color versions.

Samsung Galaxy S22 chipset leak reveals the key specs of the upcoming flagships

Image: Future

If everything goes to schedule, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series of phones should be the first flagships we see in 2022 – and a new leak gives us some clues as to the chipsets that are going to be powering these phones.

Reputable tipster Max Weinbach says that all three models – the Galaxy S22, the Galaxy S22 Plus and the Galaxy S22 Ultra – are going to come with either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 or the Samsung Exynos 2200 chipset, depending on where in the world they’re being sold.

Don’t worry if those names sound unfamiliar – neither the Qualcomm nor the Samsung processor has been announced yet – but those specs are pretty much what we would expect for the Galaxy S22, given previous models in the series.

Notch what we wanted: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra renders feature display notch

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra Leaked Renders 1
Image: 91Mobiles

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra appears to have a massive 14.6-inch display in a roughly 325.8 x 207.9 x 5.4mm body. The bezels surrounding the display appear very slim, which is likely why the notch was needed for housing the front-facing camera equipment.

On the back, you’ll probably find a dual-lens camera and the usual magnetic strip for docking an S Pen. There’s also a quad-speaker system, USB-C port, but no headphone jack.

Notably, this would be the first time Samsung has attached the “Ultra” moniker to a tablet. Hemmerstoffer says there could still be a Galaxy Tab S8 Plus (we saw renders for the vanilla Galaxy Tab S8 yesterday). If so, Samsung could be launching three tablets simultaneously, just as it’s likely to launch three simultaneous smartphones in the Galaxy S22 series.

Huawei introduces the Watch GT 3 with some impressive battery life claims

Image: Huawei

Huawei claims its regular Watch 3 can pull off 3 days of battery life (and 14 days with “ultra power saving mode”). The Huawei Watch GT 3, on the other hand, is supposed to achieve 14 days of battery for the 46mm model, and 7 days of battery for the 42mm model. If you’re using it heavily, expect those times to be cut back quite a bit — 8 days and 4 days respectively. Still, that’s a pretty steep upgrade from most of the company’s watches. This follows in the vein of its predecessor, the Watch GT 2, which had similarly lengthy battery life.

iPhone 14 display might ditch the notch, and now we know how

iPhone 14 Display

Korean site The Elec says that LG is developing two types of display technologies for mobile devices. LG is creating its own under-display camera (UDC) screen tech. Separately, the company is also working on hole-punch screens. Both these designs would allow LG to supply next-gen gen panels for all-screen smartphones. But both designs already exist in the industry.

LG Display’s biggest rival is Samsung Display. And Samsung has been making hole-punch displays for a few years for its handsets. The company also developed its first under-display camera screen for the Galaxy Z Fold 3.0.

The iPhone 14 would be an obvious target for LG, especially given the rumors that say Apple is looking to ditch the notch for good. The Elec says LG Display’s new technologies will be available to next-gen products from overseas partners. It didn’t specifically name Apple or any other potential LG customers.

LG’s hole-punch display will come out first, the report notes. The UDC screen will follow. The report adds that LG will use a low-resolution area with 200 pixels-per-inch (PPI) for the screen area above the camera. The rest of the screen will have a pixel density of 400 PPI. LG plans to increase the light transmittance by 20% by 2023 and 40% after 2024 to improve photo quality.

Gurman: Apple unlikely to hold November event; new iPad Pro, larger iMac, and more on track for 2022

Image: 9to5Mac

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletterBloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that he “wouldn’t expect” a third event from Apple this year, nor should we expect “any major other major announcements.” While some reports had suggested that Apple would announce a new Mac mini at the October event, Gurman says that this will be saved for 2022 alongside a new larger Apple Silicon iMac, new iPhone SE, and new iPad Pro:

I wouldn’t expect a third event this year or any other major announcements. Apple held three events last year because Covid-19 caused delays and disrupted its schedule. If Apple had any more Macs to launch this year, it would have announced them this past week—even if they wouldn’t be shipping until later this year. There’s really nothing else left of substance in the road map that would be ready for 2021. Instead, look for a larger Apple Silicon iMac, new Mac mini, new iPhone SE and new iPad Pro after 2022 gets underway.

Gurman also reiterates that we should expect an “M2” MacBook Air roughly six to eight months from now with its “biggest redesign since 2010.” Bloomberg had previously reported that the new MacBook Air will feature an increased number of graphics cores paired with the same number (but faster) computing cores than the M1.

Intel confirms yet again that its graphics cards are coming next year and I can’t wait

Image: Moore’s Law is Dead

If the Intel Alchemist flagship only matches the RTX 3070, that means its whole range of GPUs will naturally filter in beneath that performance tier, which is exactly what I want.

This probably won’t happen, like, right as Intel’s lineup hits the street – it never does – but Intel is going to need a hook to get people to jump on its graphics brand when it was simply never a force in the discrete GPU market before. If these leaks are to be believed, showstopping 4K performance won’t be Intel’s hook, but price might be.

If Intel could provide an affordable graphics card, even in the face of the shortage, it could win the GPU market by default.

AirPods Pro 2 leaked images show likely design changes

AirPods Pro 2 Leak
Image: MacRumors

But what if the AirPods Pro 2 has the same general design as their predecessor? That’s a possibility, according to MacRumors. The blog obtained these leaked images that allegedly show the AirPods Pro 2 design.

The case appears to be just as tall and wide as the current AirPods Pro 2 case. Two changes are quite noticeable. On the bottom, we have speakers that will reportedly play Find My sounds. Apparently, the AirPods Pro 2 case and each earphone can be located with Find My.

More puzzling is the metal loop on the side that can work with a strap. That’s not something you see on other AirPods cases. If anything, there are plenty of protective cases for AirPods charging cases. And those protective cases can be attached to keyrings and other devices.

As for the AirPods Pro 2 earphones themselves, they appear to have lost the optical sensor placed towards the underside of each bud. This might be because Apple plans to use the new skin detection sensor on all AirPods.

Dutch forensic lab says it has decoded Tesla’s driving data

The NFI said the decrypted data showed Tesla vehicles store information about the operation of its driver assistance system, known as Autopilot. The vehicles also record speed, accelerator pedal position, steering wheel angle and brake usage, and depending on how the vehicle is used, that data can be stored for over a year.

“These data contain a wealth of information for forensic investigators and traffic accident analysts and can help with a criminal investigation after a fatal traffic accident or an accident with injury,” Francis Hoogendijk, a digital investigator at the NFI, said in a statement.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Dutch lab said rather than seek the data from Tesla, it had “reverse engineered” data logs – a process where software is deconstructed to extract information – present in Tesla vehicles “in order to objectively investigate them.”
