It’s taken a really long time, but Honor has finally launched the Honor 50 series globally. Unfortunately, the Honor 50 Pro is missing, but the Honor 50 and Honor 50 Lite make the cut.

The Honor 50 starts at €529 (~$614) for the 6GB/128GB variant while the 8GB/256GB option will set you back €599 (~$695). Meanwhile, the Lite variant is available for €299 (~$347) for the sole 6GB/128GB option. These phones also have Google support, as they’re the first devices produced after Honor went independent.

The Sony Xperia Pro-I flaunts a 6.5-inch 4K OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate — unchanged from the last year’s model. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, while the back has Gorilla Glass 6 protection. Under the hood, the Xperia Pro-I is fueled by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset, paired with 12GB RAM and 512GB flash storage.

The camera hardware is the main highlight of the package. The phone has a triple camera array on the back, featuring a 12MP primary camera with a massive 1.0-inch sensor and variable f/2.0-4.0 aperture. Sony says the 1.0-inch sensor is the same as the one used on its popular RX100 VII camera, but it’s “optimized for a smartphone.” The primary camera is joined by a 12MP telephoto shooter and a 12MP ultra-wide camera.

The Xperia Pro-I can shoot 4K HDR videos at up to 120fps and slow-motion footage at 720p @ 120fps. Sony also offers an accessory called Vlog Monitor that allows creators to easily shoot vlogs using their Xperia Pro-I.

The smartphone packs a 4,500mAh battery, a step up from the Xperia Pro’s 4,000mAh cell, and supports fast charging via a 30W fast charger. Other highlights of the Xperia Pro-I include DisplayPort support, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.2, a 3.5mm audio jack, stereo speakers, and Dolby Atmos support. On the software front, the phone runs Android 11 out-of-the-box.

Motorola may soon launch a new Moto G phone with a Snapdragon 888, 144Hz display

Moto G100 Lifestyle

Motorola could soon unveil another new Moto G series phone, according to a report from TechnikNews. The device will apparently be a follow-up to the Moto G100, which launched earlier this year as the company’s first Moto G series phone with a Snapdragon 800-series chipset.

Per the report, the Moto G200 is codenamed “Yukon” and will be Motorola’s first phone to feature Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chipset. The phone is also said to feature a 144Hz display with FHD+ resolution, similar to the Motorola Edge 20 Pro.

In addition to a more powerful chipset and a higher refresh rate display, the Moto G200 will be a significant upgrade over its predecessor in the camera department as well. It will apparently feature a triple-lens camera system with a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor, joined by a 13MP macro and 2MP depth sensor.

Honor Play5 Youth announced: Dimensity 900, 120Hz screen, and 66W charging

Honor Play5 Youth announced: Dimensity 900, 120Hz screen, 66W charging
Image: Honor

The Honor Play5 Youth is powered by the Dimensity 900 SoC and runs Android 11-based Magic UI 4.2 out of the box. It has 8GB RAM on board with support for virtual RAM expansion up to 2GB. The smartphone’s base model comes with 128GB storage, but a 256GB trim is also available.

The Play5 Youth is built around a 6.67″ FullHD+ 120Hz screen with DCI-P3 coverage and has a pill-shaped hole in the upper-left corner for the 16MP selfie camera. We believe the company should have opted for a punch-hole design since the selfie shooter isn’t joined by another camera or a flash module.

Around the back, we get a center-aligned squircle-shaped island with four circles, but only two of them house cameras – 64MP primary and 2MP depth. The third one is for the LED flash, and the fourth one is just for symmetry.

The Honor Play5 Youth comes with GPU Turbo X, features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, supports 5G networks, and has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The entire package is fueled by a 4,300 mAh battery charged through a USB-C port at up to 66W. Honor says the bundled 66W adapter can charge the cell from flat to 50% in 15 minutes.

Xiaomi to bring 108MP camera to Redmi Note 11 series

Image: Xiaomi

Xiaomi is bringing the Redmi Note 11 series in China on Thursday, and today we got to learn another key feature about the new lineup. At least one of the phones will have a 108 MP camera with 2.1 μm large pixels, just like the Redmi Note 10 Pro/Pro Max.

The size of a single pixel is just marketing talk – in reality, the pixels are 0.7 μm, but thanks to the 9-to-1 pixel binning technology, they will be grouped into a single 2.1 μm pixel to receive more light and provide a better image in certain scenarios.

The default resolution of the 108 MP photos will be 4:3 since the resolution will be 12,000 x 9,000. Xiaomi is likely going to reintroduce the very same Samsung HM2 sensor that was in the previous generations of Redmi Note phones since the current Samsung HM3 platform is slightly different from the specs the brand is promising.

Another report points to unexciting iPhone SE 3 design; claims could be called SE Plus

Image: Apple

While there has been one sketchy claim that the iPhone SE 3 will be based on the iPhone XR, all reliable sources are pointing to a much less interesting design update. A new report today reiterates that the 2022 iPhone SE will still have a 4.7-inch display, strongly indicating that it will remain based on the iPhone 8 form factor.

There is also a suggestion that it could be called the SE Plus, but this is most likely a misunderstanding.

In June, noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the third-generation iPhone SE would launch in 2022, and that the design would be largely unchanged, while there would be significant improvements internally.

Kuo believes the two big upgrades will be 5G and an upgraded processor, with the new entry-level iPhone coming in 1H 2022 […]

After 5G first arrived on Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup last fall, the iPhone SE gaining the next-generation cellular radio would be a big deal as it would be the company’s first entry-priced iPhone with the tech.

Kuo reiterates that the 2022 iPhone SE will have a similar design as the existing 4.7-inch iPhone SE, with the other major change being a processor upgrade.

This was backed by a display analyst, who said that while we would see a hole-punch design coming in 2023, the iPhone SE 3 would stick to the iPhone 8-based design.

A Chinese site claimed last week that the form factor would instead be based on the XR, but we didn’t give that much credence.

Tesla’s prototype battery with 5 times more energy storage comes to life at Panasonic

Image: Nick Miotke/Roadshow

Tesla long promised big changes for its future batteries, and Panasonic hopes its latest prototype battery will deliver for the electric carmaker. On Monday, Automotive News reported on the Japanese company’s new prototype battery created specifically for Tesla. It promises fives times more energy storage, which may increase ranges significantly.

In addition to more energy, the battery will cost 50% less to produce and help boost battery production at Panasonic “100-fold,” by 2030, according to the report. These three elements could produce a game-changing battery pack for Tesla with a lower cost and more range at the core of EV adoption hurdles. Panasonic did not immediately return a request for comment and more information on the prototype battery. Tesla does not operate a public relations department to field requests for comment.

Hertz Said to Order 100,000 Teslas in Rental-Market Shake-Up

Hertz Global Holdings Inc., barely four months out of bankruptcy, placed an order for 100,000 Teslas in the first step of an ambitious plan to electrify its rental-car fleet. Tesla Inc.’s shares soared, pushing the automaker’s value past $1 trillion for the first time.

The cars will be delivered over the next 14 months, and Tesla’s Model 3 sedans will be available to rent at Hertz locations in major U.S. markets and parts of Europe starting in early November, the rental company said in a statement. Customers will have access to Tesla’s network of superchargers, and Hertz is also building its own charging infrastructure.

It’s the single-largest purchase ever for electric vehicles, or EVs, and represents about $4.2 billion of revenue for Tesla, according to people familiar with the matter who declined to be identified because the information is private. While car-rental companies typically demand big discounts from automakers, the size of the order implies that Hertz is paying close to list prices.
