iPhone 13 Pro scores 137 in DXOMark camera test, ranked in fourth place overall

Image: Apple

Another iPhone launch, another DXOMark camera test. This time, the iPhone 13 Pro has earned a score of 137, nine points more than the iPhone 12 Pro in 2020. This places it in the top five of DXOMark’s list of best smartphone cameras.

DXOMark explains that the score includes a “Photo score of 144,” a “Zom score of 76,” and a “Video score of 119.”

With a DXOMARK Camera overall score of 137 the Apple iPhone 13 Pro mingles among the very best devices in our camera ranking. The overall score is compounded by an excellent Photo score of 144. Like for all iPhones color rendering is vivid with nice skin tones and a slightly warm touch and the camera is generally very reliable. Overall Photo performance is quite similar to the 12 Pro we tested last year but improvements have been made in several areas.

The review shows that the iPhone 13 Pro has accurate and repeatable target exposure, nice color, skin tones, and white balance. It has fast, accurate, and repeatable autofocus, good detail in indoor and outdoor conditions, and more.

Huawei Mate 50 with Snapdragon 898 4G said to come in Q1 2022

Huawei is bringing Mate 50 with Snapdragon 898 4G in Q1 2022
Image: Gsmarena

Huawei is far from its glory days of being a leader in the smartphone world, due to inability to source components but the company hasn’t lost its R&D capabilities. The P50 series from earlier this year were delayed by four months and while a similar postponement might affect the Mate 50 lineup we now hear that it’s still coming.

Notable Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station claims the new phone will arrive in Q1 2022 with an LTE-only version of Qualcomm’s next top chipset – the Snapdragon 898.

iFixit Calls the iPhone 13 “a New Low” for Repairability

As Right to Repair legislation garners support from both sides of the political aisle, Apple is doubling down on its anti-consumer practices. A now-complete teardown from iFixit shows that the iPhone 13 reaches “a new low” for repairability, as it’s effectively impossible to repair at home without losing key features like Face ID.

This story isn’t as cut and dry as you might think. Yes, the iPhone 13 scored a 5/10 on iFixit’s repairability scale—that’s a worse rating than any other modern iPhone. But Apple actually made some serious improvements here. Most components in the iPhone 13 are modular and held by screws instead of adhesives, so they’re fairly easy to replace. Opening the phone is still a breeze, and if you aren’t scared of the soft L-shaped battery, you won’t have much trouble prying it out.

Google Meet’s captions are starting to get their promised live translation support

Google Meet's captions are starting to get their promised live translation support
Image: Google

Google Meet is among the biggest video conferencing apps at the moment. One of its most useful features, at least for me, is automatic call transcriptions. Up until now, though, the feature didn’t support live translations, unlike captions in apps like YouTube and Translate. Google is finally changing that, as previously announced during Google I/O 2021.

A select few on certain Google Workspace editions are now able to enjoy Translated Captions, a beta feature that transcribes spoken English into French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. Translated captions are currently available for English only right now, so if people in your call are speaking another language and you want to understand them, you’re out of luck.

According to Google’s support site for translated captions, they will only be available on the web version for now. If you’re a Workspace admin looking into trying them out, you’ll need to fill out a form provided by Google. As a Workspace user with access to translated captions, you need to go to Settings -> Captions -> Translated captions to turn them on.

Nokia Tablet Teaser

Nokia is set to announce a new tablet on October 6. The company has released a teaser for the upcoming unveiling, implying that the new slate will be inspired by the Nokia 3310 from 2017.

The tablet appears to have rounded edges, similar to Nokia’s recent smartphone lineup. Aside from that, the teaser doesn’t reveal much about what Nokia has up its sleeve. It only shows a sliver of a slate peeking out from around a corner, alongside the Nokia 3310 in full view.

AMD CEO Lisa Su warns the chip shortage won’t end any time soon

Image: AMD

AMD CEO Lisa Su has revealed that she believes the global chip shortage could be nearing an end… but things won’t get better until the second half of 2022.

This will likely come as a blow to many people who were hoping it would end sooner. Because manufacturers have been struggling to get chips for their products, it meant that gadgets like consoles, graphics cards and electric cars have all become very difficult to buy for the past year or so.

While we’ve heard from several industry voices about their predictions about when the global chip shortage will end, Dr Su’s comments are particularly noteworthy as she’s one of the most senior people to talk about the chip shortage.
