Samsung Galaxy S21 FE’s design shown through cases

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE’s design has once again been revealed, this time thanks to British retailer Box. On its website, there are renders of the Galaxy S21 FE in the Clear View Cover, Silicone Cover, and the Clear Standing Cover cases.

The renders are in line with what we’ve seen of the Galaxy S21 FE from other press images and a leaked hands-on photo.

Motorola’s official Weibo account posted a short video clip revealing the Moto Edge X30’s screen specs: 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and 1 billion colors.

Motorola doesn’t tell us anything about the screen size and resolution, but previous leaks claimed it will measure 6.67″ diagonally and have FullHD+ resolution. Something that was also corroborated by reliable tipster Digital Chat Station.

Motorola hasn’t shown us what the Moto Edge X30’s rear looks like. However, leaked renders revealed the smartphone – expected to launch as Edge 30 Ultra outside China – will sport a triple camera system on the back panel consisting of 50MP primary (with OIS), 50MP ultrawide, and 2MP depth units. For selfies and video calls, you’ll get a 60MP camera inside the punch hole, capable of recording 4K videos.

The Huawei Mate V could arrive with a foldable heat pipe

Image: Huawei

The patent, spotted by LetsGoDigital (via Notebookcheck.net), outlines a clever thermal management system that involves a folding heat pipe. The heat pipe is not traditionally a part of a smartphone known for its folding capabilities, but it would appear that the engineers at Huawei have found a way to pull it off.

As ever with patents, there’s no indication of which device this might appear in. Considering the Huawei Mate V is rumored to be launching as early as this month, this unconventional, bendable heat pipe possibly won’t be included in it.

One of the standout features of the Android 12 experience is a new security and privacy feature that Google added to Google Photos. It’s a feature many iPhone and iPad users have wanted for years, but Apple has yet to introduce. We’re talking about Google Photos’ Locked Folder functionality that the Search giant introduced earlier this year. Initially, Google launched the Locked Folder feature for Pixel phones, promising to bring it to other Android devices soon. We learned that Google Photos on Android and iOS would finally support photo encryption a few weeks ago. And it looks like Locked Folder has now started rolling out to more Android devices.

Microsoft Office has a fresh new look – here’s how to update

Image: Techradar

Back in June, the software giant announced a new look for Office designed for Windows 11 though it will also improve your experience if you’re running Windows 10 according to a new blog post from Microsoft.

At its core, Microsoft’s new visual update for Office delivers a simple and more coherent experience across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook. It’s worth noting that the update isn’t available for some of the company’s other software including Access, Project, Publisher and Visio.

Once enabled in one of the compatible Office apps such as Word, the visual refresh will also be applied to the others so Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook will have a new look as well.

Google brings the full YouTube app experience to your older Chromecast

Google finally turned the Chromecast into a fully-fledged streaming box last year, complete with an all-new interface and a dedicated remote for navigating through menus and apps. Of course, millions of old-school Chromecasts are still plugged into the backs of TVs. With a new update, Google is making YouTube work more like an actual application — a major change for how these receivers usually work.

The company announced the change on Twitter today, highlighting an improved method for browsing through subscriptions or recommended videos. Rather than displaying a generic splash screen, the classic TV-friendly UI for YouTube is now shown. Since these Chromecast devices lack a physical remote, the YouTube app automatically switches to a virtual D-pad so that you can navigate around videos and playlists. It also supports TV remotes through HDMI-CEC.

Steam May Arrive on Chromebooks with Support for PC Games

Steam for Chrome OS is nearing a beta release, according to source code reviewed by Android Police. Once it launches, the Chromebook version of Steam will use a Proton compatibility layer to support PC games, much like the upcoming Steam Deck console.

As discovered by Android Police, the upcoming Chrome OS 98.0.4736.0 release (which should arrive in a few weeks) features two flags that enable “Borealis,” the code name for Steam on Chrome OS. Source code shows that Steam will eventually offer both Beta and Stable versions of its Chrome OS client, allowing some testers to try features early at the expense of reliability.

Because Chrome OS is based on Linux, it needs the Proton compatibility layer to run games that are technically only available on PC. But that’s where we enter a weird conversation—are Chromebooks even powerful enough to run “real” games?

Messenger will soon let users split payments directly through Facebook Pay

Meta (formerly Facebook) on Friday announced a small but important update for Messenger users. Starting next week, Messenger will let users split their bills with friends and family, which can be quite useful in places like restaurants.

As announced by Meta in a blog post, the “Split Payments” feature makes it easier to split payments through Messenger. With just a few taps, users can not only invite other people to split a bill, but also set the amount each person will pay.

The company behind Messenger says that users will even be able to ask other people in a group for money and check if all the people invited have paid the bill or not.

Google TV profiles have been delayed, Ambient Mode cards are rolling out now

Image: 9to5Google

Google TV is all about the ability to sift through the huge number of TV shows and movies available on various streaming services. That’s why the addition of user profiles on Google TV has been such an exciting prospect, but unfortunately, the feature has been delayed.

Originally, Google told us that profiles would be rolling out during the month of November, a timeline that has obviously come and gone at this point. The good news is that this feature is still coming, but the bad news is that it has been delayed without a specific timeline to look forward to.

Google tells us that profiles on Google TV have been delayed and will start rolling out in the “coming months.” This most likely, in our view, points toward the feature launching sometime next year, but there’s obviously room for the feature to debut sometime this month. The company did not provide any details on the cause of the delay.

Elon Musk says a new Starship launch pad is under construction, in Florida

Up until now, most development of the company’s next-generation Starship vehicle has been centered on its Boca Chica, Texas, test facility, which Musk has lobbied to rename to Starbase, Texas.

It hasn’t been a secret that Musk wants Florida to eventually be the launch site for the spacecraft he aims to use to take humans to the moon and Mars. Concrete for the launch pad was actually poured back in 2019, but there hasn’t been much activity on the site since.

The new launch pad will be part of the existing launch complex at Kennedy Space Center that SpaceX currently leases from NASA, which is where many of the company’s Falcon 9 launches originate.

The first orbital flight of a Starship prototype is still set to launch from Texas next year, once SpaceX receives environmental clearance and a launch license from the Federal Aviation Administration.

No word on whether the Florida pad will include a wild new plan for a launch tower capable of literally catching a returning rocket as it comes in for a landing. The Space Coast is never boring…
