Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Go 2 arrives with a fingerprint reader and new Intel chips

Image: Microsoft

The first Surface Laptop Go arrived to largely positive reviews toward the tail end of 2020. It was good timing, as those thing go, with plenty of folks looking to build out their home offices as it became increasingly clear many of us wouldn’t be heading back in to work anytime soon. Personally, I appreciated the processor, portability and pricing, though the entry-level configuration left something to be desired on the spec side. As did the low-res screen and lack of a backlit keyboard.

Today the company announced the Surface Laptop Go 2. The latest version of the ultraportable laptop doesn’t address too many of its predecessor’s shortcomings, but it does arrive with an upgraded processor, moving from the 10th-gen Intel Core i5 to the 11th. The new system also gets a biometric fingerprint reader integrated into the power button, along with an improved webcam (still 720p, though) and mic array for teleconferencing.

The starting price of the Windows 11 system has been raised $50 to $599 (and let’s be real, everything is more expensive, these days). That’s still plenty affordable, and storage is at 128GB by default — that’s double the gen 1. RAM, however, is still 4GB. That can be upgraded to 8GB, while storage goes up to 256GB. It’s not an everyday laptop for power users but could do well as a secondary laptop or Chromebook competitor. This is also the first Surface to support Intel-based secured-core PC for added protection.

Strangely, the 12.4-inch touchscreen maintains the same resolution at 1536 x 1024 (148 PPI), while a backlit keyboard is still nowhere to be found. The company does, however, get a nice little dig in at Apple, noting that the Laptop Go has “30% more key travel than a MacBook Air.” That seems like an odd boast only if you’ve never typed on Apple’s older, rock-hard laptop keyboards. The system is slightly heavier than its predecessor, weighing in at 2.48 lb to the original Surface Go’s 2.44 lb.

Realme GT 2 Explorer Master to have 100W and 150W charging variants

Realme is already working on a new smartphone, called GT 2 Explorer Master Edition. This claim comes from Digital Chat Station, where they posted on their Weibo page the phone will have two variants with different batteries and different charging standards.

One will have a 4,800 mAh cell and will work with a 150W charger, and another will have a slightly bigger 5,000 mAh battery but will be limited to 100W speeds.

The 150W charging standard is already part of Realme’s feature portfolio, as we’ve seen it in the Realme GT Neo3 – the first phone with such high rates. However, the 100W solution is brand new, as it has been certified at 3C/CCC – the charger’s model number is VCBAJACH and applies 11V at 9.1A.

Reports are this charger will be coupled with the RMX3551, the alleged Realme GT 2 Explorer Master smartphone. These puzzle pieces are not enough to solve the riddle of the upcoming’s phone specs and features, but the first-gen Explorer Master arrived in July, meaning the market is already due for an upgrade.

WhatsApp’s next new feature could be one of the best it’s ever added

Image: WAbetainfo

WhatsApp keeps getting better, and as you may know, the platform recently added the long-awaited emoji message reactions feature. Developers are now ready to move on to something else, and it looks like the next major update to the popular messaging app could be one of the best yet.

WhatsApp could finally add an option to edit messages. The feature discovered by WaBetaInfo exists in a new beta version for WhatsApp on Android, although the editing feature should also be planned for iOS and desktop.

As to when the option to edit messages could exit beta stages and go live to the public, only time will tell. It is worth noting that the first signs of an edit function in WhatsApp popped up five years ago before the development team seemingly gave up on the idea a few days later.

WhatsApp developers are clearly working on the messaging editing feature again, but whether or not it will make it to the live version of the app remains to be seen.
