Samsung Galaxy S22+ appears in new images, some specs in tow

With all the Samsung Galaxy S22 series leaks in the last couple of months, there’s not much we don’t already know ahead of trio’s debut next month. But there’s no harm in seeing another batch of images and re-cofirming some of the specs.

91mobiles is delivering just that. The detailed images the publication has shared confirm that the design won’t be any different from the vanilla’s model while the Ultra’s looks remain unique to the series. There are also visible antenna lines on the frame, indicating it’s made of metal, but that’s hardly going to surprise anyone.

The report also debunks the chipset rumor suggesting that Europe might be getting the Snapdragon iterations as the Exynos chip was allegedly plagued by manufacturing issues. It says that European units will certainly be getting the Exynos 2200 chipset.

The Plus model will feature a 50MP main camera on the back along with 12MP ultrawide and 10MP telephoto snappers with support for 12-bit image capturing. The screen is rumored to reach 1,750 nits peak brightness and support an adaptive refresh rate.

The phone will weigh around 195 grams with its 4,500mAh battery capable of 45W charging speeds.

Oppo Find X5 Pro apparently spotted in the wild with Hasselblad branding

CoolAPK user (h/t: Abhishek Yadav) posted two apparent Find X5 Pro images, showing the back and the front of the device. Check them out below.

Starting with the back, we have a shiny rear cover that features Hasselblad branding. So it seems like Oppo will be working with the veteran camera company too after OnePlus kickstarted this partnership last year. We also see a rear camera housing that forms part of the rear cover rather than being a separate piece of material, complete with “powered by MariSilicon” branding.

Interestingly, the rear cover also displays two IMEI numbers, and checking one of these numbers in an IMEI database confirms that it’s an Oppo device with the model number CPH2305.

The image showing the front of the device displays some more purported details too, namely the Find X5 Pro name, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC with MariSiliconX chip.

Motorola’s upcoming flagship could pack a 200MP primary camera and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus

TechnikNews has unearthed evidence of a “next-generation” Motorola flagship codenamed “Frontier.” The device is said to pack powerful specs, including a new Snapdragon flagship SoC, a curved, high-refresh rate display, fast charging support, and Samsung’s new HP1 camera sensor. As per the publication, the phone will be powered by a Qualcomm chipset codenamed “SM8475,” paired with 8GB/12GB RAM and 128GB/256GB flash storage. While we haven’t spotted any evidence/reference of this new chipset just yet, the naming scheme suggests this could be a Plus variant of the existing Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. As pointed out by Android Authority, Qualcomm’s flagship chipsets usually follow the SM8x50 naming convention. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 comes with the codename “SM8450,” so the bump in the last two digits could mean this is an upgraded/Plus variant of the current flagship chipset. However, without any concrete evidence, this all remains guesswork for now.

Elsewhere, the leak claims that the Motorola Frontier will pack a 6.67-inch curved FHD+ OLED panel with a 144Hz refresh rate. The camera hardware will be the main highlight of the upcoming smartphone as it’s reportedly packing a 200MP Samsung HP1 primary sensor. The primary camera will be joined by a 50MP ultra-wide sensor and a 12MP IMX664 telephoto camera. Over on the front, the phone is said to feature a 60MP OmniVision OV60A selfie shooter. The front camera will implement Qualcomm’s Always on Feature.

The Motorola Frontier is also said to offer insanely fast charging speeds: up to 125W wired and 50W wireless. Other details of the smartphones such as the battery capacity, software version, and so on remain unknown at this point. It’s unlikely that the Motorola Frontier will be launching anytime soon. In any case, we expect to learn more about the smartphone in the coming weeks/months leading up to its actual launch.

OnePlus could be readying affordable phones with flagship chips

OnePlus gained a reputation in its formative years as a brand offering flagship performance and specs in an affordable package. The company’s phones have increased in price over the years, but it seems like the brand could be going back to its affordable roots for a new series.

Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station has claimed that OnePlus is working on a new phone line focused on performance and gaming. It’s believed that this phone series will have a price ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 yuan (~$315 to ~$473). Chinese pricing tends to be cheaper than the rest of the world, so we’d expect a substantial price hike in Europe and potentially India.Digital Chat Station/Weibo

The leaker adds that this new series will have a flagship processor and a flat screen rather than a curved panel. Of course, a flagship chipset doesn’t necessarily mean the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in theory. This could potentially mean the Mediatek Dimensity 9000 or older SoCs like the Snapdragon 888, Snapdragon 870, or Dimensity 1200 too. But it would still make for a boost over many other phones in this price segment.

Xiaomi reaches 240 million Redmi Note sales

Xiaomi announces 240 million Redmi Note sales
Image: Xiaomi

Xiaomi shared an impressive milestone today – 240 million Redmi Note units were sold since the inauguration of the lineup. The announcement comes eight months after Xiaomi reached the 200 million mark.

This means Xiaomi sold 5 million Redmi Note phones per month, which equals two Redmi Note phones every second for eight straight months. And these were some properly challenging months with the pandemic and chip shortages and whatnot.

The Redmi Note 11 series is slowly making its way to the overseas markets, where Xiaomi has been having a bigger share of revenue in the past few quarters. The midrange series is always in high demand, and we will probably see the 300 million milestone before the end of the year.

Windows 11 may soon support third-party widgets

Windows 11 has a Widgets panel, but it’s relatively limited since it only supports widgets from Microsoft. At the moment, it can show weather, news, traffic, and a selection of other information. You can also show your Outlook Calendar, photos, and items from Microsoft To Do within the Widgets panel. Soon, a vast library of widgets could become available. Developer FireCube claims that Microsoft will soon announce support for third-party widgets.

Based on screenshots shared by FireCube, Microsoft will soon let developers publish widgets through the Microsoft Store. The process of getting widgets into the store would be the same as submitting an application. It appears that a few types of widgets will be supported, including web widgets. This would provide developers with a few options for getting widgets onto Windows 11.

Safari 15 bug lets sites spy on your browsing activity and personal data

Just days after Apple patched a bug that could allow a hacker to send your iPhone into an endless loop of crashes, FingerprintJS has uncovered a Safari vulnerability that could expose your internet activity and personal data to an open website.

The bug originates in the IndexedDB API, which is used for client-side storage of significant amounts of structured data, according to Mozilla. As FingerprintJS explains, since IndexedDB is a low-level API used by all major browsers, many developers “choose to use wrappers that abstract most of the technicalities and provide an easier-to-use, more developer-friendly API.

As such, Safari’s version of IndexedDB is violating the same-origin security mechanism that restricts how documents or scripts loaded from one origin can interact with resources from other origins, according to FingerprintJS. Consequently, arbitrary websites could spy on the other websites a user visits in different tabs or windows.

Since some websites use unique user-specific identifiers in database names, FingerprintJS explains that authenticated users can be “uniquely and precisely identified” by sites such as YouTube, Google Calendar, and Google Keep. And since you’ll be logged in to those sites using your Google ID, the databases created for that account could be leaked, which include personal information. FingerprintJS uncovered several other sites vulnerable to the bug, including Twitter and Bloomberg.

Much of the work done in astronomy requires large groups of people co-operating and working together to make new discoveries. While most of that work is done by professional astronomers, there are some occasions where members of the public help as well. Recently, citizen scientists have helped comb through data from a NASA telescope to identify a gas giant planet located 379 light-years away.

The team of citizen scientists used data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS, to identity planet TOI-2180 b. It orbits a star with a similar mass to our sun, and a year there lasts 261 days, which makes it one of the further-out gas giants discovered outside the solar system. “Discovering and publishing TOI-2180 b was a great group effort demonstrating that professional astronomers and seasoned citizen scientists can successfully work together,” said Tom Jacobs, one of the citizen scientists who volunteered for the project, in a statement. “It is synergy at its best.”
