Pixel Watch date might be close, carrier leak suggests

Leaked image shows Pixel Watch marketing materials

A series of reports in early December claimed that Google was testing the Pixel Watch internally. A spring release date was possible, sources from within Google said at the time, if those internal tests are successful.

Google is yet to announce a new press conference, and the most likely place to see new Pixel hardware products like the Watch is Google I/O 2022, which will happen at some point in May.

But the first signs that the Pixel Watch is getting closer to getting a release date are here. Well-known leaker Max Weinbach reports for Android Police that the Pixel Watch appeared in the inventory system of an unspecified carrier.

The Pixel Watch showed up under the codename “Rohan,” which appeared in other leaks related to Google’s wearable. The device packs 32GB of storage, matching the Apple Watch. This particular version is likely a cellular model, as the mysterious carrier only sells cell-enabled models. Furthermore, the Pixel Watch will come in three colors: gray, black, and gold.

But the inventory listing does not reveal pricing details or the actual Pixel Watch release date.

AMD Zen 4 might be some way off, but speedy Ryzen 5800X3D CPU could arrive soon

Image: Future

AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor, the incoming model sporting 3D V-cache tech, is set to go on sale at the end of March, going by the grapevine.

This comes from well-known rumor peddler Greymon55, who said on Twitter that the CPU is “probably” going to be on shelves by the end of the month.

In a follow-up tweet, Greymon dropped a further nugget of info about the price of the 5800X3D, which they have heard will be around the $350 mark in the US (about £260 or AU$480, but remember that a direct currency conversion is pretty meaningless as a reflection of what the actual price will be in other regions). However, also note that the leaker added that they weren’t so sure on pricing as the release date.

Naturally, all of the above needs to be taken with the usual condiments we should employ when dealing with speculation from inside sources in the tech world.

Nubia Z40 Pro becomes the first Android to feature MagSafe-like charging tech

Image: Nubia

Nubia has done its best to make a mark on the world of smartphones outside of its close relationship with ZTE. Since then, it’s the RedMagic series of gaming phones that have managed to take off, but there’s plenty of innovation coming from the company’s mainline devices as well. With the freshly launched Nubia Z40 Pro Gravity Edition, we’re getting some Apple-style magnetic charging on Android.

Magnetic wireless charging on smartphones first went mainstream with the MagSafe charger that Apple introduced with the iPhone 12. It latches onto the device, ensuring proper alignment and maximizing charging speeds. More importantly, you get to hear that satisfying click as you stick the iPhone and the MagSafe together, which — let’s agree — is the best part about magnets.

Google, looking to ‘distinguish’ future Pixel Buds, has been buying up audio-related IP and teams

Image: 9to5Google

Google’s first two attempts in the massive wireless audio market didn’t go over super well, but its latest release in the Pixel Buds A-Series has been well received overall. Now, in line with a desire to “distinguish” its future first-party audio products, Google has been quietly buying up audio-related IP, including an entire team from Synaptics.

The folks over at Protocol have uncovered several deals that Google has made over the past few months, including the purchase of startup Dysonics and its 3D audio tech, as we previously covered.

The biggest news outside of that purchase is a previously unknown deal from late 2020 that saw Google take over parts of the audio hardware business from Synaptics to the tune of $35 million. The deal gave Google patents on audio hardware and patent applications that cover “active noise canceling earbuds” among other things. The deal also included staff from Synaptics, with the company’s former VP and GM of Audio Trausti Thormundsson moving to Google as a product manager, according to his LinkedIn.

AMD’s revolutionary 3D V-Cache chip could launch very soon

A chart showing the performance of the AMD 3D VCache 5800X3D processor.
Image: AMD

The company recently talked about the upcoming chip during the International Solid-State Circuits Conference and shared more information about the architecture. The processor is going to feature eight cores and 16 threads, a base clock speed of 3.4GHz that can be boosted up to 4.5GHz, and a massive 96MB L3 stacked cache. It also has a TDP of 105 watts.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the only consumer-level AMD processor to feature a 3D V-Cache. The technology was previously used in its EPYC workstation CPU. This is a first not just for AMD, but also for the market as a whole — there are no other consumer-level CPUs that feature an additional stacked cache.

If AMD’s estimates prove to be true, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D could become one of the best processors and compete against some of Intel’s top offerings, including the current king of the hill, the Core i9-12900K. There is also the question of how it will compare to Intel in terms of pricing. Greymon55 teased that it should be priced around $350, but this is still not confirmed, so we’ll have to wait to hear from AMD.

The next threat for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 is coming from OnePlus

Image: Sammobile

Samsung is the undisputed king when it comes to foldable smartphones that are readily available to the masses. The game just went out of reach for other players in the market, thanks to last year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 devices. In fact, thanks to these devices, Samsung came out as the top foldable smartphone brand in 2021.

While there are other options available, such as the OPPO Find N and the Huawei Mate X2, these devices aren’t accessible outside of China. But it seems like that is going to change soon. Because in an interview with Android Central, OnePlus has hinted that it is working on a foldable smartphone.

After shedding some information about how OnePlus would bring a cleaner software experience with the upcoming Oxygen OS 13, based on the Android 13 OS, the company also shared an interesting tidbit about its future prospects.

Apple Stops Sales in Russia

On Tuesday, Apple said it was pausing all product sales and limiting the functionality of some of its services in Russia in response to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. iPhones and other Apple products are currently not being sold through Apple Stores in Russia, and Apple Pay and other services have been limited.

The company has also removed Russian news apps—including the app for the Kremlin-backed news services Russia Today and Sputnik—from its App Stores in countries outside of Russia and said it has disabled traffic patterns and live incident reports in Apple Maps in Ukraine in order to deter the tracking of Ukrainians’ movements.

Apple is the latest tech company to take a clear stand against the invasion of Ukraine—which thus far has led to more than 130 civilian deaths and hundreds more injured—by cutting off or severely limiting access to its products. While Apple has zeroed in on bans within Russia, other tech companies have removed support for Russian services in European countries. Microsoft has removed Russian news apps from its global Microsoft app store, plans to deprioritize search results for the same news outlets on Bing, and will ban Russian state-sponsored ads. Google has blocked the YouTube channels for RT and Sputnik in Europe, is blocking edits to Google Maps in the conflict zone, and is delisting Russian state-funded publishers in Google News. And Facebook parent company Meta said it would restrict access to RT and Sputnik in Europe.

The Polestar O2 is a concept EV with its own drone you can launch while on the move

Image: Polestar

The Polestar O2 is the latest concept vehicle from the electric automaker, and on top of a wealth of sustainable materials used in its creation, it has a particularly spectacular party piece involving a drone.

The two-door, fully electric sports car actually has four seats inside and its hard-top roof can retract, making it a convertible – as Polestar points out, you’ll be able to enjoy a more relaxing roof-down experience without the sound of a traditional engine.

No performance specs have been revealed for the Polestar O2 yet, but the company claims it’s “lively, light and full of confidence” and delivers “exciting, spirited driving” thanks to its bonded aluminum platform.

Inside, recycled polyester is the only material used for all the soft components of the cabin, while the different grades of aluminum used throughout the vehicles are clearly labeled, so they can be recycled effectively once the life cycle of the car has come to an end.
