The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is rumored to feature a unique health sensor

Image: Chris Wedel/Android Central

The idea of using a wristwatch for simply telling time has long been gone with the rise of smartwatches. Samsung has been at the forefront of this category, and recent reports indicate that it will announce its latest efforts, the Galaxy Watch 5, in August of this year.

According to a report from ETNews, Samsung is rumored to launch its successor to the Galaxy Watch 4 this fall. While we have yet to see any changes to the watch’s design, the report tells us that Samsung will continue pushing the capabilities of a smartwatch by adding in an infrared temperature sensor.

Skin sensors can be affected by external factors such as ambient temperature and extra heat generated by exercise. Samsung isn’t the first watch manufacturer to put a temperature sensor on our wrist, but it might be one of the most accurate by forgoing the more common skin thermometer in favor of the infrared option. ETNews also notes that Samsung has completed a prototype of the Galaxy Buds that includes an infrared sensor as well.

This upcoming OnePlus phone has a rather peculiar design

oneplus nord 2t leaked render 1
Image: 91Mobiles

The OnePlus Nord 2T has been in the news for months. Specs and launch details of the phone leaked a while ago and now we have the renders courtesy of folks over at 91Mobiles.

What we see is a rather peculiar-looking OnePlus phone. It features a sandstone back reminiscent of the OnePlus One. A chunky camera module breaks up the all-black look of the back panel with an entirely different pop-out color. The camera housing itself is a bit strange. Two circular cutouts divvy up the triple camera setup of the phone. It’s certainly a design we’ve not seen on any OnePlus phone before, or any other phone for that matter. You can check out the sole leaked render below.

New iPhone SE, iPad Air, green iPhone 13 available for order

Image: IDG

After putting the Mac Studio and Studio Display for sale immediately after the “Peek Performance” keynote, Apple has updated its store with the rest of the new products announced this week.

You can pre-order the iPhone SE ($429), iPad Air ($599) and iPhone 13 ($699), and 13 Pro ($999) in green for availability beginning next week. New Apple products generally sell out fairly quickly, so you should probably grab one if you want to make sure it arrives by next week.

Other stores are also selling the new products, including TargetBest Buy, and Amazon.

The iPhone SE 3 is a small upgrade over the previous model, bringing a faster A15 chip, 5G, and camera improvements. The iPad Air also received mostly internal improvements, with an M1 processor, 5G, and a new front camera that supports Center Stage. And the iPhone 13 is identical to the previous models other than the new color.

Microsoft Office.com revamped for business and education customers

New Office Design
Image: Microsoft

Microsoft Office.com and the Office app for Windows just received a revamped experience for business and education customers. The update aims to make it easier to find content, regardless of which Office app was used to create it. Both the Office app and Office.com now have a new Home screen with a Quick Access section and a new My Content pane that shows files from the entire suite.

Office also has a new Create pane, which works with all of the Office apps. A new template tool lets you create content, such as Word documents or PowerPoint presentations. Like the rest of the updated experience, the template tool focuses on helping users make content rather than debating which Office app to use.

“Just select the type of content you wish to create and you’ll be presented with various template options across multiple apps all at once so you can decide which option works best for you,” explained Microsoft in its announcement post.

Four-year-old Galaxy S9 gets latest security update

Image: Sammobile

It’s commendable that Samsung is updating even four and five-year-old smartphones with the latest security patches. Two such smartphones are the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+, which have started getting the March 2022 security update. In fact, these devices are getting the new update earlier than various other recent phones.

The latest software update for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ bears firmware version G96xFXXUHFVB4. The update is rolling out in Germany right now, but we expect it to expand to more European and global regions very soon. The new update includes the March 2022 security patch that fixes over 50 vulnerabilities. It could also include bug fixes and stability improvements.

If you are a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ user in Germany, you can download the latest security update right away by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file for your device from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Google’s Messages app can now handle iMessage reactions, challenges Apple with new features

messages
Image: Google

Google is giving its default messaging app a big upgrade, the company announced today. The Messages app, which comes pre-installed on most Android phones, will gain a number of new features with the update. Most notably, it will address the long-standing issue where iMessage’s “Tapbacks” weren’t delivered as emoji reactions, but were rather sent as a separate message. It’s an annoyance that’s made chats between Android and iPhone users confusing, cluttered and far too noisy.

Other coming updates include nudges to remind you to reply to messages you missed, separate tabs for business and personal messages, reminders about birthdays you may want to celebrate, support for sharper videos via a Google Photos integration and an expanded set of emoji mashups, among other things.

After the update, reactions from iPhone users will be sent as an emoji on text messages on Android. As on iMessage, the emoji reaction — like love, laughter, confusion or excitement — will appear on the right side of the message. (On Android, it’s the bottom right.) This feature is first rolling out to Android devices set to English, but additional languages will follow.

Biden Calls for End of Normal Trade Relations With Russia

President Joe Biden on Friday announced that the US, along with the European Union and G7 countries, will seek to halt normal trade relations with Russia. The move, which requires an act by Congress in the US, would raise tariffs on many Russian products.

The action is the latest attempt by the US and other countries to impose economic penalties on Russia for its war on Ukraine. If approved, Russia would lose its “most favored nation” trading status, which allows goods to move between countries at lower tariff rates and with fewer barriers to trade. The president said the move has bipartisan support.

2 billion genetically modified mosquitos are about to be released in the US

Mosquito Bite
Image: BGR

The new species, codenames OX5034, is made up entirely of male mosquitos. The new species is derived from the Aedes aegypti family of mosquitos. Just like others the company has released, this new 2 billion should produce female larvae that die off before they reach adulthood.

With the success of last year’s Florida release, the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has approved Oxitech for additional releases in the Florida Keys. The EPA has also approved a new program with the Delta Mosquito and Vector Control District in California. Furthermore, Oxitech says that it is reaching out to other state regulators to get programs running in more states, too.

Female mosquitos are the only mosquitos that bite and are attracted to human blood. Because the new genetically modified mosquitos are all male, the genetic modifications shouldn’t pose any danger to people that encounter them.

Oxitech also says the modifications will carry on through other male larvae. This should help the mosquito population lessen over multiple generations.
