Galaxy S23 Ultra to feature an unannounced 200MP camera

Image: Sammobile

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is expected to become Samsung’s first smartphone to feature a 200MP camera. However, according to a new rumor, the company has yet to reveal the 200MP sensor that it plans to use for its next S-line flagship phone.

In other words, the Galaxy S23 Ultra won’t feature the ISOCELL HM1 or the ISOCELL HM3 sensors. The HP1 was employed by other OEMs, and the HM3 got announced in May.

According to a recent rumor (via @UniverseIce), the Galaxy S23 Ultra will supposedly be equipped with a 200MP sensor that Samsung has yet to announce. Evidently, the HM1 and the HM3 sensors are out of the equation.

No other details are known about this mysterious 200MP sensor destined for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it could be a variation of the existing HM3 with minor upgrades. Or perhaps it will be a new sensor designed to combat Sony’s new 1-inch sensor.

iPhone 14 may take another step towards portless design by ditching mobile staple

Image: TechRadar

We’ve been hearing for a while that eSIMs (embedded SIMs) might soon replace physical SIM cards, and it’s now sounding a lot like the iPhone 14 could be the phone that kicks off this transition, as some versions will reportedly be sold without a removable SIM card.

That’s according to The Wall Street Journal, and means a subset of 2022’s iPhone family will potentially be solely reliant on an eSIM. Rather than popping a tray out of the side of the phone and slotting in a physical SIM card, an eSIM is a digital SIM that’s built into the phone and can’t be removed; so when changing carriers/networks a new number is just programmed onto it, rather than needing to slot in a physical card.

However, this change is unlikely to be forced upon you if you buy an iPhone 14. Rather, eSIM-only variants of the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and iPhone 14 Max are expected to be offered alongside models that have both eSIM and a physical SIM card support.

Amazon Prime Video gets a visual overhaul on several platforms

Amazon is rolling out a major update for the Prime Video app on several platforms. The update brings a much-needed visual overhaul to Google TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Roku, and Apple TV devices. In addition, the updated UI is also available on the Prime Video app for consoles.

The refreshed Prime Video UI resembles that of Netflix and Disney+, with a large preview window at the top, followed by a new top 10 list and rows of recommended movies and TV shows sorted according to various categories. The interface also has a navigation bar along the left edge, which gives you quick access to Search, Home, Store, Live TV, Free, and My Stuff sections.

Along with the interface changes, Prime Video now also has new visual cues to indicate whether a piece of content is available in your subscription or available to rent/buy. Videos that are included in your Prime Video subscription have a blue check-mark, while those available to rent/buy have a gold shopping bag icon.

Netflix explains how it will stop the widespread account sharing

Image: Netflix

Netflix revealed earlier this year it is losing money as people from multiple households are sharing accounts, even though it goes against its terms of service. We are now seeing the company’s plan to clamp down on this.

The plans will get a new “Add a home” option. It will allow one account to be shared across multiple households with users paying extra for each home after the first one.

The “Add a Home” option is an evolution of “Add Extra Member” that was pioneered in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru earlier this year. The feature will be tested in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Users on the Basic plan will be able to add one home to their account, Standard up to two, and Premium up to three extra. It will cost ARS 219 (about $1.60) per month in Argentina and $2.99/mo in the other LATAM markets.

Apple sued for blocking Apple Pay rivals on iPhone

Image: IDG

It’s a day with a Y in it, so Apple must be getting sued. This time, the Cupertino company stands accused of profiting heavily–and anticompetitively–by giving its own Apple Pay service preferential treatment on the iPhone platform.

The class-action lawsuit was filed in US district court in Northern California yesterday by the law firms Hagens Berman and Sperling & Slater. It complains that Apple allows its own Apple Pay service to access the NFC chip on the iPhone, while prohibiting rival services such as Google Pay and Samsung Pay from doing the same thing. This means there is only one tap-to-pay option for iOS users.

The suit further claims that Apple makes a huge amount of money each year thanks to its exclusive Apple Pay policy, which enables it to charge card issuers high fees for each transaction; open competition would lead to these fees having to drop, lawyers argue. The company is reported to have made $1bn from this revenue stream in 2019, and is predicted to make four times that in 2023.
